Data loss from overclocking?

Is it enough of a threat to remain at stock speeds? Or to keep important files on a different PC.

I already keep them duplicated on four 1TB hard drives.

The porblem is that if you corrupt files unkowingly and then backup over your previous backups. now your backup is in the same bad state.
 
The only times I have lost data are when the PCI bus wasnt locked and the SATA controller was highly overclocked too, thus corrupting some files that were open for writing when the controller crashed.
This only ever resulted in a broken OS, I didnt ever lose personal data.
The PCI/PCI-E buses are easily locked if not automatically done by the motherboards default config.
I have lost data when forgetting to properly eject USB drives! Luckily it can be copied again but its not a lot of use when on site with corrupt files.

You should always backup personal data anyway in case the drive dies of other causes.
Keep your hard drive cool if its power cycled lots. ie if you use power saving or boot a lot.
Large changes in temp cause excessive wear.
I backup my data every month with 4 months worth of back ups kept and yearly long term backups copied too.
The whole backup folder is backed up to another drive periodically as well.
Better safe than sorry.

Thats why I keep 4 months of rolling back ups before one gets deleted.
Therefore I have 4 months grace to spot anything gone wrong.
Couple that with the complete copies of the backup folder about every 4 months, fairly robust.
(I use old hard drives for the extra offline backup copies)
 
Can not disagree with backups. Anything critical gets copied to another machine as I work.

I never run a machine with anything on it I cannot do without anywhere near the ragged edge. IMO there is no increase in risk of data loss in a properly OCed machine with good cooling and stability testing. That said. if the machine is an income producing tool it is a much better idea to leave it stock or at best a very mild OC. A case can be made for improving the factory stock cooling to high performance cooling and components even if the machine remains at stock speeds. As with all things there are degrees of risk based on widely variant conditions. With even a little care the increase in risk of data loss on a properly OCed machine is no greater than a machine at stock speeds.
