Hey all,
So our data-center is getting some cable trays put in and we are looking at the lighting at the same time. Currently using the florescent tubes about 6 ft above the racks...mostly in the isles. Don't think that was planned out all the great as some of the isles are darkish.

The problem is we have our HVAC units in the ceiling space with the ventalation as well. Soon to have the cable trays the lighting is going to be somewhat lessened/in the way and needs to be moved.

Is there another option that people have seen for lighting...like LED or something per rack either in the racks or hanging above each rack?

Just curious on what is out there for rack lighting other than the classic hanging shop lights.

Thanks!

I have never seen a hanging shop light in a datacenter, Always Florescent lighting as they give off little heat.

Also in most cased the HVAC blowers are not in ceiling, they are off to the side, with spot coolers if required.

Whats the issue with ceiling Florescent lights?

They make very nice florescent T5/T8 fixtures that can be had for under $100 each that will increase the light output substantially when compared to the last generation of light fixtures.

I would stick with the florescent...cheap, reliable, and cool. LED is great, but puts off more heat then people think.

We aren't worried about the amount of light put off, more the location of the lighting. With the HVac right above the isle it's a bit tough to put the lighting in the same spot. The Datacenter decided to not go with a raised floor to save money so HVAC in the ceiling... Oh well. We just need to re-position the lighting to hit the isles better as right now there ares lots of dark spots for some clients.

Make sure there's sufficient clearance to replace the florescent tubes when they go out when the cable trays are installed. They tend to forget that little detail.
