According to a recently released IBM report, data breaches in 2017 declined by 25 percent from the previous year. This is good news, but the bad news is the use of ransomware is on the rise and this is the reason for the data breach decline. If you think about this it makes sense because all of our personal info is out there now and there isn't much money to be made on it anymore. However, prevent us from using our data and a hacker can make some serious cash unencrypting things that we really need. I hate it when bad news comes with good news.
The report found that the focus of criminals in 2017 to shift to locking or deleting data, not just stealing it, through ransomware attacks has been proven to be just as, if not more costly to organizations than a traditional data breach.
