Officials at the University of California, San Francisco said that a payroll and administrative server breach may have put 46,000 current / former students and employees at risk.

UCSF co-CIOs Randy Lopez and Jonathan Showstack wrote that a breach was suspected in March involving a file server located at the University of California Office of the President in Oakland. Some 46,000 current and former students and employees were notified of the potential unauthorized electronic access.

omfg...HOW HARD IS IT TO SECURE DATA???!!!

this is like the 2nd UC to have shit breached. I would think they'd have learned from the first time. i think maybe if they wanna keep data like this, they need to put a computer in a vault and not hook it up to the net and put all the shit they need on it. but even then its prolly gonna get breached again. maybe its time to go back to paper records.

from what i have seen, univiersities are just as bad as the govt when it comes to computer security. they have so many different systems installed at different time, its such a mess. there are no less than 3 different networks i use at uw madison, all with different passwords and other crap. and of course since everyone is always fighting each other over budgets (just like the govt) very little gets done to bring it all together and secure it. i expect some VERY big lawsuits are needed to get some people off their asses.
