Is it worth it?

I type 80-120wpm (depends on the test :D) on my $20 logitech media something keyboard... I've probably gotten used to membranes but I almost want a das keyboard... (I even did 100wpm on one test on my Eee :eek: )

Are there cheaper (mechanical) alternatives?
 
I don't look down anyways, think it was more the mechanical switchs and different weight-groups, but supposedly keytronics makes membrane style keyboards with different weighted keys for like $15... so I dunno :confused:

I'd rather not pay $80 to find it's not any better...
 
The kb is awesome. However, the 2 special things are the missing letters, and the old-style click keys. IMO, if you want a plain jane kb with loud keys, there are cheaper out there I am sure, and since you dont look at the keys anyways then whether the letters are there or not shouldn't matter.
 
Grab hold of a used good condition IBM Model M 1391401 "clicky" keyboard or its current equivalent and I think you would be really pleased with the feel and responsiveness of the keys

No kidding. People just don't understand but those are the best keyboards ever made.

Actually the new version of Das Keyboard actually replicates the feel of the IBM Model M keys very well. The missing letters is what makes it suck. If they had those I'd take two right now.
 
Ima just buy a model M on ebay, hopefully for under $20...

Then I can paint the outside, and dye the key-caps hopefully :D

I don't care about letters, I just can't justify $80 for a keyboard...

Input devices are very important to me so $80 for a keyboard is money well spent if it lasts and feels right. I'm using an old mechanical keyboard on my test bench that I paid $50 for in 1996. It works perfectly and if it were black I'd still be using it on my main rig. That's the only reason I changed it. The damn thing is unfortunately beige and I've never liked the way painted keyboards have looked as I've tried it in the past. The feel of the keys on this thing is almost as good as those on the model M but they don't click quite the same way. Definitely superior to the modern Logitech and other membrane keyboards.

Though as far as membrane keyboards go, the Logitech G15's are great. Unfortunately they feel worn out after about a year.

That's how DAS got the black color most likely...

Regardless I should be able to do the IBM keys, but the outside casing might be a bit more trouble as it's pretty big and I don't really have the containers to do it in :(

So maybe I'll do black on beige... might look cool :D

I'm not sure what the company is but there is one that makes mechanical black keyboards with replacable keycaps and the keyboards are also back lit similarly to the way the G15 is. They are about $150.00 though.
 
I could put some LED's under the tray, I'd see light through the cracks :eek::D

That's a good idea, I might do that...
 
$20 keyboard + couple hours taking it apart, cleaning it, dying it, soldering some LED's together...

or $150 keyboard?

I'll post pics when I'm done, I'm gonna start bidding on ebay... :D

I don't want to screw with it. Plus a new keyboard is going to be USB and not the old AT or PS/2 connector. I hate screwing with the adapters. It's just not worth my time and plus I don't think it would turn out that good if I tried to do what you are talking about.
 
Eh... it'll be a fun project :)

Only now are motherboards starting to come without ps/2 conectors, I'll splice the cable and re-wire it for USB when that happens :D

All the ASUS ROG boards come with PS/2 mouse ports but not PS/2 keyboard ports. Kind of odd, but that's the way they are doing it now. The Intel D5400XS has no legacy ports on it at all.

The Asus P5k has it the other way around: PS/2 for keyboard only. Weird...

JOOC, am I the only one that notices a slight difference in cursor responsiveness from PS/2 to USB? I've tried a placebo test in the past (courtesy of my roommate) and noticed right away the difference between my mouse on USB vs. PS/2...

I might have it backwards. I remember testing a PS/2 keyboard on one ASUS board and it didn't work. I didn't try a mouse though. In any case, PS/2 ports are finally disappearing.

Well that's the worst packaging I've ever seen, they should have just slapped a label on the keyboard :eek:

But I'll be taking it apart sometime this weekend and I'll update with pictures of dying the keycaps :)

Yea... I honestly stood at my door looking at it for 10 seconds with a "WTF" face... I opened it and it was fine, typing on it right now. Atleast it works and it's super clean :)

Stage 1 of the "keyboardmodificationchanging" process... going to dye/paint the shell, and then solder a black USB cable to replace it, as soon as I figure out which wire goes to what :eek:

Had to buy a 7/32" deep-socket to actually take apart the keyboard, I actually didn't have to, in order to dye the keys, oh well :)
