Yeah but that vehicle is far far more expensive than proposed replacements to the HMMV I'm sure. Also size/maneuverability come into play.

People who think DARPA is bad are idiots and know nothing of what they have done and are planning.

I'm curious I haven't looked into it in awhile but I know DARPA was looking at creating a HMMV type vehicle that can transition into flight for special forces teams, that shit would be awesome.


The humvee definitely needs an overhaul, even if we leave the middle east in short work (unlikely) IED attacks are a proven weakness in the vehicle.. without doubt wherever they would be used next would exploit that.

Armor that will deflect explosions is essential... Replacing a vehicles cheaper than replacing 4 people....

While this is true, the other problem comes from how the government awards contracts and provides compensation.

Since its not really their money, there is little incentive to be particularly frugal. If a chair costs $500, so be it, you just put that into the budget and you're good. The US military budget has proven it is unlimited after all, with the entire world's armed forces budget combined still less than the US military budget.

Then you have the issue of the decision makers getting a little too friendly with the private contractors, often awarding no bid lucrative contracts to their friends.

So if you think that privatization is the end all be all answer to get a handle on military spending, think again. Its going to take a LOT of reform in government to get a handle on that.

The Marauder is an armored 2 ton truck. They are not listing vehicle weight or miles per gallon.
The "thing" looks like a reconnaissance vehicle. I expect its easily air transportable.
The HumVee is magnificent at what it was designed to do.
The missions of now are not it.
 
DARPA provides funding to have the private sector come up with this stuff. DARPA doesn't do itself. One thing that I like is that they don't just pay a bunch of people in the private sector. They hold a contest and who ever has the best build/design gets the money. More bang for your tax payer buck. While in university we took on a DARPA challenge for a fully automated vehicle for today's roads. Every university and private org that entered payed for (or got sponsors - Porsche sponsored my school :D ) and the body of research that came out of all of that was pretty impressive. Research not done by DARPA.

We've been using these or something similar to them for the past 7 years or so.... worked great in Iraq, weren't very good in Afghanistan though until they started outfitted them with IRS (independent rear suspension). Very cramped though in the current body armor unless wearing a plate carrier.
 
But I just saw the Marauder on Top Gear, that thing could run over a hummer without even blinking.

I saw that ep (Season 17, Episode 1) of "TG". What a beast that 10-ton Marauder is! :eek: And the way it took the explosive that the H3 was blasted into hundreds of pieces. cool:
