ok so installing my lovely new PSU, i managed to catch the SATA cable on my HDD, now the SATA connecter as you may know is tiny, with about 6 gold pins on it, reinforced by some plastic. Well i managed to catch it which in turn broke the plastic off, and the cable disconnected so all i have is 6 or so pins sticking out which i cannont attach a cable to because it wont stay connected because the plastic is missing!! is there anyway to sort this, i have tried placing the SATA cable back but with no luck it wont go on all the way! So now my 40GB+ files software, over £500 easily has gone! unless i can somehow connect it back up, then transfer it all onto a external or new HDD.

Also if i end up lossing it all, when i get a new hDD will i be able to install the XP disk again using the same code? or not because its already been registered? If i can't lets hope M$ can sort it out! as i dont want to shell out £50+ for another copy of XP, i can barley afford the HDD after buying my PSU!

Im really not happy about this! SATA is improving on so many things but the stupid connection to the HDD is so small it breaks when you knock it at least IDE had a decent connection that doesn't break!

PLease guys im praying for some help!

So the connector on the drive, as opposed to the cable, is broken?

Right off the top of my head I'd say try and superglue the plastic piece back on to reconstruct the connector. Or maybe go even more ghetto (temporarily) and tape or zip tie the cable into the drive until you manage to get your data back.

Depending on the importance of your data and your skill with an iron, you could in theory solder up a cable to the drive as a last resort also.

You will be able to reinstall windows on the system with the same serial #.
 
Can you get high res, well lit pictures?

It is possible to solder temporary wires to the connectors on the drive to a cable to retrieve your data.
 
I had a very similar problem before. If you can put the SATA cable back on by carefully aligning the pins into the correct holes and tape on the connector, you can then save your data. The broken end should still have the plastic piece still inside it, so you can line the pins up and put it back on. It might help to bend the pins downward slightly to apply pressure on the plastic piece inside the end of the broken SATA cable. Hope this helps. BTW, one last resort (hope you don't hafta do this) would be to strip the end of the SATA cable and solder the correct leads to the pins on your harddrive. Then, you might not even have to throw it away( even though I still prbably would).

Yes the drive was the broken bit, and because of your amazing i dea ve gone and glueed it up!, not that itll come off ever again, but its up and running now :D

i love you :p

although now i can wait till i have some money to get a larger HDD and then ghost them over
