Hey gang,

I posted this in blindnero forums, a place where they say they help people with technical problems on Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. No response here or on Steam's forums. Any ideas?

Hiya folks,
I've got the infamous fps drop problem after playing a while on the Steam version. PC is high-end (core i7 920, 6 gig ram, vista 64, ati 4890). Vista is fully patched, drivers are fully updated. Framerate is fine until I get killed and load a savegame (or after an auto-save). Then, framerate drops to a crawl in open areas (framerate stays ok for indoor areas). I've reinstalled Steam twice complete with restarts and removal from the registry. Do I need to reinstall Dark Messiah before or after the Steam reinstall? Can I keep my savegames?

Here is a link with other stuff I've tried:

You're best bet would be to use the uninstall feature of that piece of garbage.

Honestly, the above advice is usually quite stupid, but there really is no reason to play this game to completion. You max out your skills early, and there really aren't any good ones. The games is as mediocre as it gets.

It's widely known that this game has MAJOR memory leaks. I tried playing through and got slowdown every few minutes. only way to help is to change just one of the video settings and have it re-load the game engine. then it'll be fine for another few minutes, but it'll go right back to chugging along. Not worth it.

This is one of my favorite games!

I have this exact same problem when the game is installed through steam. Right after defeating the undead cyclops in stonehelm and waking up on the bed the framerate dies.

I was able to play through the game with no problems with the game installed from the DVD.

Didn't happen to me or my many of friends who played it

stop dling porn once and a while and clean that pc

How is the multiplayer side of it? I just may have to reinstall it. I quit playing after it became hard to find servers.

Can't beat playing undead making "Ni ni ni" emotes. lol

I have heard this memory leak can be solved with the dvd version but not the Steam version. Is this true? And can memory leaks be solved by users, or can only patches fix them?

I remember getting a similar problem in Oblivion

Eventually I realised I had Fraps running in the background and the quickload f9 key was also set to start the video capture and dumped the frame rates. Moral of the story is to make sure nothing is responding to your quickload keys external to the game.

I know it's probably not your problem but it's always worth double checking :p

DM uses an extreme amount of RAM, more than can be loaded even into 4GB of RAM, so you need to do several things:

1. You need to increase the game's -heapsize setting to half of your physical RAM. Those with 2GB of RAM should use -heapsize 1048576, and those with 4GB should use -heapsize 2097152. Do this in the target box of your Dark Messiah launch icon, or by using the "Set launch options" in Steam.

2. Defrag your hard drive. No, seriously, do this. It matters in this case.

3. If you have set Windows to use no pagefile, you need to turn it back on. Any advice to turn off the pagefile is bad advice from people who don't understand how it works. The rules of thumb of 1.5 or 2 or 2.5 times your physical RAM are also bad advice with no basis in fact; see this article.

4. Defrag your pagefile. For WinXP, use PageDefrag. PageDefrag doesn't work for Vista, so use this method.

If these don't solve your problem, see more troubleshooting suggestions in the Dark Messiah Tweakguide (particularly page 3).

Sorry, that's not the case. Tons of users have problems. My box is very clean btw.

I'm just saying it's not just because someone's box isn't clean. there are/were definitely issues with the game, and Ubisoft has not supported it.
