Since my previous PC was annihilated by a fire i came up with a project to keep me busy during long winter evenings. My goal was to use mostly scrap parts that could be found at my company - and since i'm importing and refurbishing PC's there was a lot to work with.
I started out with a case from a 5 year old HP xw9400 workstation, this is how this ugly piece of junk looks like:
The xw9400 had a water cooling system that kept two AMD Opterons 2389's below 60 degrees celsius, so i decided to dismantle it and use it in my project, as it should have no problems with cooling my 4790k (but i guess we will have to see about that later on).
I started with painting the case black:
Applying finishing putty to remove some dents and deep scratches from the side cover.
Priming the side cover. Next to it there's the top that i initially wanted to put on the case, but later on i decided to go with wood on both the top and front of the case.
Thats the wooden top after applying mordant (no idea if thats the right word, i basicly mean that paint for wood
). I will be putting couple of layers of varnish on it later and polishing it to get a glossy effect. Both the front (u can see it on the left) and top of the case are made from pallet covers (also in the picture) - those are used to transport laptops.
Cutting out a window in the other side cover. Unfortunately i don't have a lot of precise tools so i had to do it with a grinder that left some nasty edges, but i will be making a woodden frame for the window so in the end it won't matter.
In the meantime, my hardware arrived: i7-4790k, MSI z87-G45 gaming, Palit GX970, 2x8GB DDR3 HyperX Fury 1866Mhz and some SSD drives (yeah, i know they're shit but i got them for half the price).
Making the window frame (its also made from pallet covers) and fitting it to the side cover (the top has been varnished once at this point).
In the meantime i cut out some plexiglass for the side window and painted the frame.
Tomorrow i'll probably start painting the windowless side cover glossy black, making the woodden front, evening the windowed cover with finishing putty and priming it. Wish me luck
Also i'm not sure whether i want to keep the front clean with just some fan controls and temperature indicator or i want to put the dvd drive there as well.
As i mentioned in the topic, this is my first attempt at case modding, i hope it will look as good as it does in my mind.
