I hear this pump is pretty good but people say you need to do a little work on it. What kind of work am I looking at? Would you consider to this be the best overall pump? I need to pump through 4 blocks and 2 radiators. If you have any other pump recommendations for this type of setup, please do so.
Anyone know how much noise this pump makes and do I have to buy barbs for this pump. If so where can i get them and what kind do I buy?

All you need to do is seal the pump inlet housing with some Marine Goop. It took me about 2 minutes, just apply it all the way around the inlet housing (where the housing meets the pump), let it cure for 24 hours, and thats it .. easy. As for noise, I find it to be VERY quiet, I can't hear it over the 120mm fan thats running, all you can hear is the flow of the water (which obviously cant be avoided), all in all though I think its a VERY quiet pump.

Mine rattled a lot (just this one, none of my others have) and the silence mod works very well on these pumps. They do have problems starting up, but they will go after about 10 seconds.

They are indeed good pumps, but they do add a decent amount of heat to the water.. I use danner mag pumps on my salt water reef tank and when i switched my old pumps out for new mag pumps my water temps increased some. I am not sure how many watts or heat the smaller versions like the mag 3 put out, but since they are designed the same way as the mag 7 and mag 9.5(ones i use) they may add some heat to the water. But im sure not much more then any other pumps really.

best overall? probably something fromt he blueline line... i hear their T series is pretty badass... Iwaki makes good pumps as well, but they're going to cost you the big dolla. i'd expect to drop $150 or so on one of those pumps...

I still think though to this day the hydor L30/L35 is the best pump price/performance wise. I cant count how many times ive used this pump in systems.

for the eheim/hydor battle it definitely is... i think the mag3 is by far a better pump for the price/perfomance minded though... it runs approximately 40$ shipped online or 45-50 at stores (they're known under the 'supreme' or 'pond master' name...).

I just came across the instruction sheet for my mag3 pump, and it has a graph of Flow vs. Head on it, I figured you might be interested in the numbers ...

MAG 3/5/7
At 0ft Head
375/500/700gph

At 1ft Head
350/450/650gph

At 2ft Head
325/420/550gph

At 3ft Head
300/370/500gph

At 4ft Head
260/325/475gph

At 5ft Head
220/250/425gph

At 6ft Head
175/180/400gph

At 7ft Head
120/150/350gph

At 8ft Head
80/85/300gph

At 9ft Head
50/25/225gph (Note that the Mag5 has a lower flowrate then the Mag3 at this head!)

At 10ft Head
20/0/125gph

I got these numbers directly from the pumps instruction sheet, so I do not know how they were aquired, im going to assume they are accurate. Hopefully this can help you make a decision, flow/head is one of the most important characteristics to a pump .. so
:)
