As many of you, i have been eagerly anticipating the release of the DD hard drive cooling block. I contacted them with some detailed questions and they were nice enough to not only respond, but also provide pictures of their upcoming design!

According to the email, they said the following:

a. The block will take up two 5¼ bays.
b. They are in process and should be for sale on the site in two weeks - although some distributors may have them sooner!

i'de really like to see a block that is compatible with the 3.5 drive bays that soo many of us already use for our harddrives - but i do like this design and have moved my pump in preperation for this new design. we can only hope they keep it in a price range that was originally expected (the $30-40 range)
 
The damn thing still doesnt cool the bottom of the drives where the spindle and electronics reside, I mean how well will this thing cool just be cooling only the sides?
 
The best place to cool a harddrive is the sides. If you cool those big chunks of alluminium on the sides the whole drive cools down.
 
Ah, that looks much better than any other HD cooler I've seen.

I don't really mind the 2x5.25 thing myself. Thats where I keep my 15k drives anyway, which would be the only ones I would consider cooling with something like that.
 
Very nice, finally a harddrive block that (hopefully) is designed around larger than 1/4" system. (blah blah, euronuts please dont pop in with 1/4" BSPP nonsense, the hole is still 1/4")

Tell her since the drives are so much faster, you'll have more time to hang around and bug her. :D Oh wait, she won't like that...tell her you'll have more time to "work on the box".


The sides of my 250gb sata are slightly warm. The top is quite hot though.
 
lets hope they include some rubber washers or something to help damper the vibrations of two drives attached.

EXCEPT the pcb board, and while the heat from the bearing/spindal may migrate to the sides, I think it best that a HDD WB cools both the sides and bottom....... :cool:
 
your just going too far there, if you cool the sides the whole thing goes down in temp, look at the many water blocks that just cool the sides compared to the ones that cool the bottoms... i bet the ones that cool the bottoms are only cool because the block is cooling the temperature sensor on the pcb and but what cools the top of the hdds or the sides with those water blocks? mmm pcb is a wonderful conductor of heat ;) :p

thinking about it a bit more it does touch the spindle hub on the bottom but its just a giant heat spreader in that case since the hdd is practically hermetically sealed inside, and the only heat transfer in those cases i suppose is through the metal, would be interesting to see what is better, ppl open there hdds up for windows all the time, maybe someone could open one up and put a temp sensor in for internal temp
 
true... i mean, they don't build the "heatfins" on the sides of the drives for nothing... i have yet to see a hdd that is built with any heat removal in mind for the bottoms of the drive...

so either DD did their homework and will later explain why cooling the bottom is useless... or they overlooked this fact. i know for fact that the tops of the drives really do get hot and removing heat from the sides will reduce this temp. quite a lot.

i personally thought their block would include bottom cooling, thanks to the success of the Koolance bag blocks... but again, maybe we are misled into thinking bottom cooling does much.

Actually there is the Watercool Silentstar HD coolers that have a 1/4 BSPP thread. So what is the difference with a 1/4 NPT except lousy sealing vs excellent sealing? Same ID and they come with up to 1/2" ID spigots. What really cracks me up about you DD nits is that you all pooh poohed HD cooling when the only ones available were out of Europe and now it is the best thing since sliced bread. :D

Not likely you will see anyone using the bag technique as the Koolance Hydra-Pak is a patented technology.

Come on man. Where do you see anyone ever trying to cool ANY pcb board with anything more than a little airflow.

I have never in my life seen a heatsink or waterblock designed to cool a board. They are designed to instead cool the parts that generate heat.

You cool the CPU and Northbridge, not the motherboard

You cool the VPU and Video Ram, Not the board of the video card.

Once again, it ISNT the pcb generating the heat on a HD, so why would you cool that?

Edit: Sorry, I got hung up on the pcb thing and missed your "while the heat.....may migrate to the sides". There is no "may" about it. Go research harddrive cooling a little bit more before you start asking for useless products.
 
Ever touch the really big chip (I don't know what it does) on a hard drive board? On my old 80gb 740DX Maxtor, I couldn't leave my finger on it for more then a few seconds. It gets really hot.

so you put a heat sink on it, doesnt take much, my routers processor got so hot that i burned my finger on itin just a second or two, small heat sink took care of it, some time put your finger on your motherboards clock generator, its just as hot if not hotter then the hard drives circuitry, those run without problems why shouldnt a hard drive

also what dies on a hard drive first, the circuitry or the bearings!? i havent even heard of the controller dieing from anything but power problems

so whats more importaint to cool, the hard drives bearings /motor or the chips that are designed to handle up to 140F anyhow( geforce 2's still run today at about 140F and with no heat sink)

I understand that, but then again, we could all just slap an aluminum heatsink onto a CPU and have it run at 65C just fine. Cooling the circuitry does not eliminate the ability to cool the drive itself. Of course the bearings are more important, but in the end water cooling is not necessary for hard drives. If you "need" this, then you are probably running a 15k rpm drive, and on those, cooling is always a good thing to have on both the drive itself and the circuit board.

I will agree with you on the one point: Water cooling is not needed for hard drives.

What people fail to realize is that it only takes a small breeze (barely even precievable by your hand) to keep an entire hard drive at room temperature.

Many people people will say that thier hard drives get so hot they are uncomfortable to touch. That is because they have no airflow around them and normally at least 2 drives together. They forget the fact that it takes a very long time for the drives to reach that temperatute.

CM-Stacker has a HD cage with a lowflow silent fan attached to it that puts a small amount of air around the drives. This is pleanty.
 
Ofcourse it is not needed... servers running many, many 15K HDDs only need air, although the room they are in are usually air-conditioned! but that's because they need to get rid of the heat the servers dump into the air instead of it being used to purposely to cool the servers.

It's just the mentality of 'it's generating heat... surely it must be better to water cool it!'

or.. 'i've water-cooled by CPU, GPU and NB, let's watercool my HDDs'

or.. 'DDs release a water-cooled HDD block, surely it must work wonders otherwise they why would they release it?'

They release it not because of need, but because of peoples desires and misconceptions (otherwise known having too much money to burn and stupidity!).

And I have also notices some of what TN was stating before... when HDD coolers from Europe was in fashion... many people on the 1/2" (DD?) camp were ney-sayers... but now DD has release one... :rolleyes:
 
That looks just like my AlphaCool dual hard drive cooler minus the shroud.

i dont know about all of yo but my harddrives "width" goes from side to side - where the HECK is my 5.25 bays going to get an extra inch or 2 in width to fit this sucker in?

or deos it ly top to bottom so your HD's are on their sides? - i assume this method ?

and you can probably by a decent 120mm fan that would keep your drives just as cool :D


but iguess if it can get cooler can only be better for the hardware.
 
its all bling here, im only interested in it cuz my hdds are 42C and ghetto mounted so i figure kill two birds with one stone :p

Unless you have some ancient scsi hard drive, your drives are 3 1/2", so they'll fit in the cage, and into a 5 1/4" bay like they were planned that way :D

Where can this easily be obtained for a US resident? I have yet to find...
And the 1/4" ID of the Silentstar is not the same as this block - so they aren't comparable for use in 1/2"ID systems. Would it not provide resistance due to the un-matching ID of the threads?

Careful - while i agree that side cooling is the most effective, the Koolance Hydra-Pak does exist, does cool the PCB and keeps cooling to the 3.5" bays without the need for using the larger 5.25" bays... It's a quite popular design, it's just too pricey and not as effective.

now that is just absurd... if DD expects to sell these units for that price - they can expect them to fail among the educated cooling community... it was hard enough convincing me to move my drives from my already fan cooled 3.5" HD cage... there is no way I’m going to spend $100 on a block that is hardly "needed" and puts my drives in a quite inconvenient place. The price is upsetting and i hope that retailer is just gouging the price because they have it so soon.

for me the other alternative is two zalman hdd coolers(need somthing to hold the hdds in those bays without it being ghetto), each of those is what $30-40? but im still not willing to spend more then $50 on it, ill machine my own blocks based on the dd design before i spend $80 on that

if you mean the ZM-2HC2 - Case-mod.com has them for $23

And i agree - with prices of actual drives dropping, i'de cost less to replace the drive then it would to cool it... somewhere around $50 is a price i would be looking to spend on the DD also.
 
not just that, it would be less expensive just to buy aluminum /copper stock and run it through the mill to make the groves, or i could make a cnc design, easier just to do it by hand through the mill and use a drill press and tapp the barbs, probably a hour worth of work?

spending maybe $20 extra for time saved is well worth the money but not the price that was linked to earlier.....
