My 4870 decided to artifact last night, it died when I went to a dual monitor setup. Connected second monitor, booted and artifacts. Tried even a fresh OS Win 7 and Drivers install. no luck, In 2d it'll work for a while, then hang, in 3d, artifacts and crash regardless of memory/core settings,and this card was never OC'd. Now she's pretty much dead. DAMNIT. I was going to wait, but went with the 5850, is that card worthy? I'll miss my 4870, That was one great card.

Why would attaching the 2nd monitor push a water cooled, NOT overclocked video card over the edge. Damn thing never got over 35C. When I removed the water block, everything looked good, all memory chips and cpu were making good contact. I'll say this once. FUCK.

Your post isn't clear, but I am going to assume you tried disconnecting the second monitor?

My post wasn't clear because I'm a bit tired. fought with it for a long time last night. Yes, I did disconnect the second monitor, set everything back to original state, and reloaded OS/Drivers, same problem. Even on boot, at the BIOS screen, I get a screen full of snow now. I can try a few times and eventually get through it and get to Windows, but what good is that. I'm so damn picky about my PC. I keep it clean and use basically the best quality parts.

Have you checked your PSU?

I haven't thought about the power supply. I have no real way to test it. I've thought about upgrading it anyways. It is a 1k watt thermaltake, It may not be the best, but should be able to handle the load.
