I just bought a 9800SE that I will convert to 9800 pro and then OC to 9800 XT (hopefully), and the bastards shipped from their cali warehouse...I'm in NJ, come on!

anyway, wish me luck :D

Know what's worse? Living in Mississippi. If they ship something from the Tennesse warehouse, it CAN be here in a day or two. But no, Fedex holds it until the scheduled delivery date and I'm not allowed to pick it up.

sucks to be you.....j/k...I think the Canadian's get screwed on a lot of things...I did hear that you can have stuff sent to a holding facility just south of the border and pick it up? is that true?

Hard to find, but there are places that will do it for you.

Also, we're not screwed.

There's little you can buy on NewEgg that you can't buy in Canada from a Canadian online retailer.

I think vibecomputers.com is the "newegg" of Canada. Less selection, but the service is awesome. Also, you can post on the site's message boards and get a response really quickly. I had to call them about an order once, and they picked up on the 2nd ring. Just had to clear something up, whole phone call lasted less than a minute, and I got the package 2 days later.

good luck lol

right now my bank account has about $10 in it. i'm funding paying for this card by returning the mistake of a 9600 I got at compusa for the same price this 9800 is. i could return the card any time but I want to be able to play games and the only replacement card I have is a geforce2, ATi drivers + nvidia drives = rarw

The powercolor one, the cheaper one actually uses better ram for some reason (the other one is boxed retail, thats why its more), everything ive seen has said the powercolor always does the conversion

Here are the 9800 SE's that newegg has.

Why didn't you go for the $139 Sapphire 9800 SE that looks like it has the L-shaped memory? Does the Powercolor 9800 SE really have a much better chance to do the 9800 SE --> 9800 Pro conversion? I checked OCFaq and the success rate is about 50% with no artifacts, all 8 pipelines working flawlessly.

And what is this non-retail Powercolor 9800 SE you speak of? The only Powercolor 9800 SE's newegg has are retail versions. And only this one has the L-shaped memory.

I actually just ordered that same card, (lol already put it in my siggy), along with my 2nd piece of GEIL 512ram... I was wondering how much a difference I will notice from my previous Radeon 9000... i went from a geforcefx5200 to r9000 to now the powercolor 9800se, so i am hoping it will kick some rear....

as far as new egg, i have to give them props...
first time i ordered from them i got my order in 2 days, and that included: a case, a mobo, a stick of ram, and a 120 gig drive which i just rma'ed to seagate. not to bad...

i did however notice that they also shipped my 9800se and ram from CA also, and i live in VA... not to fair for me either... ehh... i can wait for the performance boost, i have hw i should be doing anyway... lol

welcome to the forums. im not sure about the performance increase, although i heard that the SE line of cards is like the nvidia mx series. im sure others will be able to tell u if that card was a good choice.

actually looking at it, theyre both retail, so I got the faster card, for less, and retail...weird

banned: youll notice a HUGE difference. hell I'll notice a difference and i'm only going 9600 to 9800. I watched games on other peoples comps at a LAN i was just at, they all had 9800 and computers much slower than mine, and they were having 60+ frames at 1024 32 wtih all the stuff turned up, and I, well, wasnt.

Ive had bad experiances with sapphire, and the other one is retail and clocked higher right out the box.

check this out, review of the sapphire 128bit vs powercolor 256 vs powercolor 256 with 8 piplines.

http://www.digital-daily.com/video/ati-radeon9800se/

according to this, a big distingushing factor between the pro and SE is 128 vs 256 memory interface...so IMO theres a much better chance of just getting a neutered pro that works perfectly with all 8 piplines, since i'm getting the 256 version (which kicks 128's ass)

well, got it. right off its faster than my old card so thats good. i softmodded it and it was fine at first. now i get corruption, its weird. when I first did it BFV was flawless, now a couple hours later, its corruption city. maybe I have bad cooling, I hear that this thing is super sensative. we shall see.

and does ANYONE have a link to an actual comparison with success rates for each card? I couldnt find anything that said "i tried to softmod this card but got corruption", everyone has said "i tried it and its flawless"

Not to get too off-topic, but I prefer:

www.pricenetwork.ca

It compares prices on all the "Mom and Pop" stores across Canada.

The not shipping to Canada thing from Newegg isn't so bad (I have a friend in Michigan). It's when they catch you at the border with it. Sometimes, if you get a prick of a customs agent, you're looling at a massive duty fee.

If it's something small then it really isn't hard to sneak it across. So far I have never been searched and I've been across the border many many times.

If you're not willing to risk getting caught though then another good Canadian vendor is www.shoprbc.com which actually has comparably pretty good prices considering the falling US dollar.

Nothing else I need to say.

Same thing happened to me when I got my P4 3.0 C and ramn excpet i live in AZ and mine got shipped from NJ. Every other thing I ordered from them has come from cali like 50 or so orders so far. Except the ONE I was most EXCITED about.

I got that powercolor as well, and it has softmodded flawlessly. Also, while the picture for that sapphire has the "L" memory, the title for the item says 128 bit. Its also clocked at lower speeds. One more thing, Newegg is the best!

Newegg used to be my life until they built a warehouse in TN and charge tax for orders in TN. I've started going back to my old tried and true mwave.com for future purchases.

It's assholes like you who do nothing to help the economy in this country. Good job, bush.

I live in VA, and I find that when newegg ships from california, they get here a day faster than the NJ.

With the NJ warehouse, they put the damn things in a holding facility and make me wait :(

Wait... %25 tax from my paycheck isnt enough ??

Do you report to your state that you purchased something from another state online and that you would like to pay taxes for it because you want to help the economy ?? even if you dont have to???

I think thats a NO... get off the high horse.. the whole purpose of shoping online is low prices and no taxes..

Yeah, I HATE that. You'd think they'll just be a swell company and just deliver it asap. But no, they deliver on whatever time you paid. So if they can get it to you in a day or two, and you ordered 3-4 day..it won't come untill then.

Well, that's just the nature of business I suppose:eek:
