Damaging my speakers?

So i have some speakers that can handle "25W – 120W continuous into 8 ohms" and my receiver puts out, for the fronts, "90W + 90W @ 8 ohms" (which im guessing means 90W for left channel, 90W for right channel) So if i put my receiver's volume to the max, which i do a lot because i have friends over and we listen to DVD audio and stuff. Would this not then damage my speakers? Does the word "continuous" hint that those numbers are some sort of RMS rating? Btw, i get no distortion at max volume. does that hint that no damage can be done right now to these speakers?
 
Actually, the receiver will put out enough wattage to play the speakers very loud, and can put out higher than the rating of the receiver. The problem with this is that the receiver begins to clip, and since the ear cant easily detect distortion until 10%, you wont notice that you blasting your speakers like that will eventually blow them. I found this information on the Harman Kardon website but i lost the link.

my receiver's volume goes from -70 to +16, by maxing, i go to 0. Would you suppose that 0 is the 90 Watts? and that i should not go searching for distortion above that?

btw, what does clipping sound like?
 
Well, clipping is just the distortion caused by the limitations of the receiver instead of the speakers. If you can hear it then you're already way above the volume you should be at.

If you leave the volum at +0db, then you are correct that it will be the full 90W. Anything over that is bad news for your speakers. Also, if you have any type of bass boost enabled on your speakers, then you dont want to go above -10 dB.
