damaged USB port catastrophe

Hey everyone,

Well here is my issue. Yesterday my mother was cleaning my room and managed to strike the side of my PC case which happened to have a side USB port where my mouse was plugged in. When she struck the side of the case the USB port was damaged. Just to make this clear, this USB port came with the case and was on the front side of the tower (not on the back of the motherboard) The PC shut down after that and when I tried turning it back on I noticed that there wasn't a startup beep and the display wouldn't initiate. Another odd thing I noticed was the HDD activity light was a constant red (not the usual blinking) and the power indicator light wasn't even on (it's usually green).
All the system fans, graphics card fan, hard disk was running, and motherboard power light were all on. Now I already tried another motherboard and eliminated the graphics card as the culprit since the other motherboard had only on board video. I used the same memory, power supply, cd rom, and SATA hard drive (also used another IDE hard drive). I reset the CMOS as well.
If anyone can recommend something to try I am all ears. This issue has proven to be extremely perplexing and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

Here is a picture of the damaged USB port:

Here are my specs:
Asus m2n-sli deluxe - Apevia X-Cruiser
AMD X2 5200 - 2GB pqi turbo DDR2667 - FSP 450psu
eVGA 8800 GTS 640MB - 200 GB SATA WD HD

There's damage on the motherboard. Or the case is broken. That's what I think. Anybody else?

You removed the USB header for the front of the case from the motherboard? You might try to remove the CMOS battery for a couple of hours or overnight after unplugging/turn off the power supply. Make sure the case front headers are removed

I'm thinking it's the case because I got the same problem using a different motherboard. My question is, what could be broken on the case to cause this problem?
To the second response, yes I removed that part on my own, it didn't break off by itself. Also, what front headers are you referring to?

The front USB port, which attaches to the motherboard (USB header) via a wire that leads to the front of the case, is the one that was damaged, so it should not be hooked up. The contacts are probably shorting. You could try a different power supply because you could have shorted out one of the voltage rails or regulators.

Oh okay, yeah I removed that. As I said before, I tried a different mobo as well so I think it very well might be the PSU.

Hey guys,

So I replaced the power supply and the memory, both are brand new, and I'm getting the same problem. No initiation of the display and the HDD activity light is a constant red and not blinking. I've ruled out the video card, as I've said before, because I tried hooking everything up to a different motherboard and the display wouldn't initiate with the onboard VGA. The only common component left is the HDD and the case. Also, a USB mouse I've been using isn't powering on when plugged into USB motherboard jack.

Any thoughts?

The board would post without the hard drive attached, so that rules that out. Have you tried running with the board out of the case on an insulated surface like cardboard? If that doesn't work the board is probably toast. Look around on the board for burt traces, popped capacitors, components with obvious damage. For all the time money and trouble you've spent you should just get a new board. Sorry for your loss
Had to edit here. Could the heatsink have dislodged and overheated the processor?

Hey just to be clear, the board doesn't post at all. I get not initialization of the display and no system beeps. I went to Circuit City and they said that the hard drive was intact. I swapped the motherboard and got a post with the same PSU, memory, hard drive, and graphics card so it has to be either the CPU or the motherboard and at this point I'm seriously considering just spending $200 on an core 2 duo CPU/mobo.

And yes, I have tried running it on a cardboard box.

Maybe the USB pins are touching one or another?

have you try bending them straight out?

I know it sounds crazy but I use to have a USB hub and one of the USB sockets were damage. One of the pins were bent back and touching a metal surface causing the hub to not function correctly. After I straight out the pin the USB hub work fine. I unsolder the USB pins in the socket and tape over it for now.

Test the CPU if you know anyone that has a board. Maybe it's just upgrade time. The board is $88 at newegg. Again, sorry for your loss.
