Damaged Heatspreader on X2

I bought an OEM X2 4400 from a favorite online store, and it looks like it's ben used or damaged somehow. Every side (except the top) is scratched or glazed like the picture shows--when I slide a knife over that area, it is bumpy. I really don't know how any heatsink could scratch the heat spreader like this--has anyone seen something like this before? I'm afraid that the heat spreader might have been jolted around when it took this damage, so the core or internal TIM might not be running perfectly.

That's normal; don't worry about it.

ummm paranoid much? Looks fine to me. The cpu either is 100% working or dead - no in between. Put it in you machine and press the on button and see what happens.

my guess, thats from the soldering/welding of the sides to the top of the TIM. I just had mine out last night and it looks the same and is purring at around 2.5GHz (I have a 4200 BTW)

Thanks for the replies--it didn't seem to me that this could be normal, since I can't see anything similar in the few pictures I have of my 3200+. I'll give it a try tonight.

No trust me, this is normal - I've seen more processors than I can count with the same scoring.

you can use a razor blade... from like a mach 3 shaver not a "razor blade" and cut of the IHS.

its not very hard and will give you better temps. with my IHS my 2 core were drasicatlly different temps, when i took off my IHS the difference in core temps was negliagable...

<---dying laughing

Thats COMPLETELY normal, the heatspreaders are pressed and that groove on the side is from the die. 99% of them are like that.
