D975XBX Bios Question

A question for the group... its about the MB but it also has to do with O/C so I dont know exactly where to post it...

I am the proud owner of a new system that has me somewhat at a loss. I recently purchased an intel D975XBX motherboard and a Core 2Duo E6400 with the expectation that I should have no problems doing a modest overclock on slighly enhanced air cooling.

I have a rev 304 board with the latest bios (7-14-06) and I am quite surprised to see that I do not have the ability to manipulate the vcore. Some searching on the web indicated that a hardware mod was required to make this happen. Can this be true? All of the sites that have reviewed this board have talked about its overclocking ability (some do say its a pain) and even shown pic's of the bios menu where the vcore is manipulated. Yet strangely absent fromt their reviews is any mention of having to soder two points together on the board.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Am I missing something?

Thanks...

ps... if you happen to have any experience with turning the speed stepping off give a shout out on that too. I have EIST disabled in bios and the power scheme set to "always on" but cpu Z still shows the speed step speed/voltage when not under load.

Thx... I know which points... do you think that is what all the reviewers did though? It seems odd to review a board and talk about modifying the vcore and then not mention this mod...

just seems very odd to me.

Then here is another question. I dont think that I want to permanently mod the board. Intel support indicates that new destop tools/utilities are coming out that are more compatible with the conroe cores. If the desktop manager were modified to make use of the vcore settings (if its even possible) then in the future I would be fine.

In the interim - can the mother board mod be done with a screw driver or something else to make the connection so that the menu can be accessed? Set the vcore and reboot - or does the connection have to be there all the time?

Well you can always desolder the connection. It's not hard man, my 14 year old brother can desolder stuff.

You can also go to Radioshack and buy a conductive ink pen and connect the two points. Rubs off with a piece of hard plastic.

If that is too much for you you can also just put a short piece of wire on some tape and bridge the connection that way. Just make sure that you dont bridge or short anything else.

Thanks guys!

Just a little update for anyone who is working with this MB...

I was able to get the thing stable (so far) at a 30% o/c. This is running the chip at 2.75ghz which is pretty fast. Im very happy with that. This is on stock core voltage but I had to drop my mem divider to 1/2 and increase the voltage to 1.9 to get the ram to keep up. My ram is only 667 (dont get me started on the OCZ 800 that I wanted to buy but wouldnt boot with the board) and I can push it to about 725 on stock voltage. I might go a little faster with it, but really - the dang thing plays games screaming so I might just leave well enough alone.

thx again...
