So if the D4 is some Laing pump and the D5 is a better Laing pump, is the MCP650 just a rebranded D4/Laing [some confusing naming scheme] and the MCP655 a D5/Laing [some other confusing naming scheme]? Or are they radically different, with one being better than the other?
 
you have it correct. the DD D5 and swiftech MCP655 are exactly the same pump. both pumps are a special version of the laing D4.

the D4 and the MCP 650 are exactly the same pump. both pumps are standard versions of the lailng D4: http://www.lainginc.com/D_Series.htm
