D3D Override and triple buffering?

This is probably the wrong section for this but I think it is also the best place for an answer to it.

I recently installed RivaTuner for the Override options.

I wanted to force Vsync and Triple buffering for Bad Company 2 since i get screen tearing no matter where I enable vsync. I enabled it in CCC and through the BC2 settings.ini file but still have tearing unless I change resolution to another and back.

Anyway, I'm more concerned about the program and other games like WOW or Everquest 2.

Will it make a difference if a game already has triple buffering and vsync options on (that work and don't need forcing) , but then also have D3D enabled in the background? Will there be a downside or any bugs?

I haven't run into any problems. I always have D3DOverrider running, and I usually set the options in game if I can. If you do run across one with issues, it only takes a couple clicks of the mouse to turn Overrider off.

When you come across games with those options in them do you keep them on ingame also?

Also trying to decide if triple buffering is always worth keeping on if I keep vsync on...

Also what do you keep your detection level at in override? Someone said to keep it at medium for Bad company 2 or it will have problems with Punkbuster or something...

1. Yes. I've never ran across any kind of issue doing this either.
2. I can't run V-Sync without Triple Buffering. It keeps the game going from a solid 60fps to 30fps if my videocard can't keep pace.
3. I keep it at low, which is default. I've never seen any reason to change it to a higher level.

Odd when I installed it, it was set to medium.

Anyway, thank you for the replies.

Guess I will keep it on at all times and also keep the options on in games that have them.

Setting Vsync in game or in D3DOverride does the same thing. There's a D3D flag that is either turned on or off and indicates if Vsync should be on. So it shouldn't matter where you set it they both flip the same switch.

Yea I figured so, just wasn't sure if both were on if it mattered. Like if that had some weird affect. Doesn't seem to though. I played BC2 almost all day with a bit of EQ2 thrown in and nothing weird showed up.

It's possible that a game may use a vsync flag set in-game to also trigger some additional optimisations, and not trigger the optimisations if vsync is only forced externally (I'm thinking like applying additional physics effects if there's CPU time available, etc). I have absolutely no idea if any game is doing something like this - it's just a purely theoretical reason to turn vsync on in-game.
