D Link in Compaq wont work

I formatted my grandmas computer. she uses dial up but i dont. so i put in a d link nic in her computer. i plugged in the network cable and the lights went on. when i try to go onto the internet it wont allow me. i go to tools connection and lan settings and click auto detect w/e.

i go back and try again and still nothing. so i found the cd for the d link and put it in. in my old computer it always did a auto run. in hers it doesnt so i go into my computer and try to set it uthrough there. nope there is no setup. she has a compaq persario its like 4 or 5 years old so she doesnt have anything high tech on it. she also is running windows 98. she doesnt want xp or 2000 so i just put 98 on there.

now how do i get the lan to work on there?

i cant do a regualr network setup like you would on xp because it doesnt have the same layout.

how do i tell it that it is on the network?

1.) go into BIOS and see if it is enabled
2.) go into device manager and see if it is working properly
3.)sounds like it is just a driver problem, try to find the drivers on the dlink website (from a different comp ) and then install them onto her comp.

should work.
