I'm looking to get a pair of MAudio AV 40's for my laptop setup. Is a D/A/ DAC really needed? Will there be a notable difference in performance from the monitors?

Laptops usually have the shittiest of the shit onboard when it comes to d/a processing, so yea you'l definitely get an improvement from a decent sound card.

However, feeding your M-Audios a decent signal wont change the fact that those M-Audios are only putting out mids and highs. I would make sure you got a full range audio system before worrying about signal distortion.

Unfortunately the av40s don't have a sub out, and only give you access to the right channel's amplified signal, so the only way to introduce a sub into your system without splitting your line level signal is to send the line level from your PC to the sub with the cable that came with your av40s, then from the line out on the sub to the line in on the av40s with a standard RCA to RCA cable.

The Dayton Sub-80 will do the job nicely. The Polk Audio PSW10 is a more popular option, but it's a bulkier sub, distorts at lower volumes, and doesn't have an RCA line out option, which forces you to split your line level signal which causes more problems.
