Ok this drive blows!

First off no support from the website, the firmware updates haev mismatch errors, and this is reported by several people.

Second, I believe why no burning program works is because the Cyberdrive CW088D DOES NOT support Philips CD-R80 CDs. I assume this because I found a site that has compatible media for CD-Rs, neat site, but Philips and Memorex wer not mentioned for this drive.

I would try another type, but guess what, I ain't got no other than those.

Third, the access times f!cking blow! It's fast, it burns a compilation of 21 songs in under 5 minutes, more like 2-3 minutes ... but it isn't doing me any good.

I disabled the IMAPI CD_R from the XP Pro services, unchecked the exaclink( a feature of the Cyberdrive ) and it burns the songs, but it skips through the whole CD and is unplayable really. If it plays at all.

So yeah, screw Cyberdrives , they blow!
 
not saying the drive dosent blow.... as i have never heard of this brand befor... there for it most likely does... but.. have you tryed replaceing the drive cable, perhaps your getting buss errors due to a bad cable, and that is messing up the access times... (it would only effect the access times thow)

Geez guys, I have never had these problems before. I know I have been posting galore on here, but I am swamped.

I was updating the firmware on this stupid Cyberdrive, and yup...

It stopped updating, it just sat there forever, so I ended the program, .. didn't work, I let it set there... nothing. So yeah, I turned the power off, now the drive won't even open or close or even be found ... doesn't operate.

I suppose that means I completely fucked the drive up.

Which is really kinda f'd up if you think about it, I was only ytrying to get the damned thing to work.. so no "I" didn't fuck it up, it was the shotty Cyberdrive company that makes sucha crappy drive their customer support can't even fix it.

I am f!cking dead guys... my girlfriend is gonna be super pissed we can't afford a new drive.

I don't get it , she said it worked before, then all of a sudden stopped working, then some asshole got it working again but left the system in utter sh!t with 4 anti-viral systems on it, and god knows what else that only a format would have easily taken care of and created less a headache.

If this thing can be flashed and fixed, I'm gonna try. I ain't never seen a CD-R just not even open or close or do anything... great.

Sounds good because I believe the drive is completely fried now from a firmware update.

Sorry about that. Computers are so frustrating because you cannot hit them very hard without causing a financial blunder.

Here is a quote of what I did : "You must create a shortcut of the Windows flash file, go to properties, and at the end of the Target: field, enter /NCM888 after the quotes. now, apply, double click the shortcut, and you're on your way to 140E!!

Now instad of 140E i used this method to update it to what my model needed which was 120E.

So yeah, if the drive isn't seen, and booting up this computer takes about 2 - 3 minutes when it used to take a minute or less, and there is no power to the drive and the drive light doesn't come on, and it doesn't respond to the open and clse button.. Iw uld say it is teh dead.

Unfortunately there is nothing to do with anything in regards to my situation within that faq. I don't have that particular chipset to use the nifty flash tool.

So I assume I will be buying a new burner whenever I can afford it. Yay... Ramen and Peanut butter and jelly once a day for a month.

I had to disable DMA first and make it PIO

No sir, I only followed those instructions since all the flash files don't work unless you edit them.

I can't think of every contengency, and obviously they didn't either.

I would tell you what this drive has, but hey... I don't remeber a DMA ... not like it matters since it isn't apearing in the device manager.

The one thing that everyone told me woudln't work on this HP ... works... the multimedia keyboard with the volume keys and all.

DMA = Direct Memory Access
PIO = Programmed I/O Modes

typically you check the status of the device via the Device Manager
>IDE ATA\ATAPI Controllers > DClick Appropriate Channel > Advanced Settings > Select PIO for the optical prior to flashing
(and I always removed any other drive on that channel and made the optical the master)

or at least that was part of the proceedure for the opticals Ive flashed, did you read the manufacturers proceedure?

Nothing on post or CMOS...

Wasn't any manuels to flashing this POS, just the mismatch error updates off their websites. I know what DMA is, I just didn't remember seeing it on the drive.

Honestly I didn't think it would destroy the drive... There has to be some BIOS utility that allows one to manipulate the firmware...

I doubt it, probably some big expensive machine that the company owns that can only effect the firmware.

Jeez... Imagine a virus that attacked the firmware of things and rendered them broken. That would be sickening. You could make someoen buy a whole new plethora of equipment.

So yeah, if I could see it in the CMOS I would be happy. The only thing it sees is the HDD, the DVD rom she has as well must be connected via the CD-R becasue at post and CMos you can't see the DVD rom... but in Windows it is seen in the device manager and functions.

Which makes me wonder if there is still hope somehow.
 
Okay, okay, calm down! First things first.. you do know which IDE channel it's on, right? Also, is it Master or Slave? How do you know that your drive doesn't have a MediaTek chipset? If it does, you can probably use MTKFlash or MTKWinFlash. Failing that... might I suggest a Lite-On?

I had a Cyberdrive DVD ROM, tried to flash firmware and just wouldn't finish. So I just power down and powered up my system BAM dvd rom does not work. I knew it was messed up cause drive wouldn't open or detected by windows. I don't care no more since i have a Liteon now. Updating their firmware is very easy like 1 2 3 BAM!
 
Well I followed your FAQ to flashing and Cyberdrive wasn't one of the MediaTek chipsets.

The CD-R was Master, with the DvD rom as slave. The DvD rom would NOT show up in post/CMOS , but would show up and work fine in windows XP Pro.

The CD-R however, the Cyberdrive I fried, will not show up in post/CMOS or Windows. The power light does not flicker, the drive will not respond to the open or close button. It was slowing my boot process by nearly a few minutes with it dead in the water, so I took it out and made me dvd rom secondary master.

What HDD isn't on the first IDE channel?:confused: I know people can be silly and all, but my CD-R DvD rom wher on the secondary IDE channel.

How can I use the MTK flash when the MTKflash doesn't even see the drive that it needs to flash?

i.e. I have tried that.

I saw a Liteon for 32 + 5 shipping on NEw Egg. It was 52x, any suggestions because this CD-R is dead.

German's should just stick to making Henckels, Wustoffs and Panzer Fausts... leave the tech to the Japanese.:rolleyes: Cuz they Cyberdrive is th suck.
 
Damn! :( Sorry about the drive,man. Go for the Lite-On 52327S.. awesome drive. I would have told you to use MTKWinFlash, which works even though your drive may not be detected by your BIOS, but unfortunately your drive does not have a MediaTek chipset, ruling that option out..

In any event, sorry about the ranting , but I hate not being able to solve a problem, and the information available on the Cyberdrive I had is very limited and misleading.
