cutting PSU fan cable?

I took my mothers PC apart to clean it and noticed the PSU was incredibly hot so I turned the PC on and noticed the fan wasn't even spinning, The fan isn't connected by 1 of the 3 pin connectors, It is hardwired into the board so I have an ungodly amount of 80MM fans laying around that fit perfectly but I can't really hook it up (or close the PSU) without getting rid of the dead fan, I can just run the new wire out of the front of the PSU and plug it in somewhere...

Not sure how long it was running without a fan but there was hot glue pieces loose inside the PSU...Amazing how it didn't die

So, about cutting that wire?

If you need to wire in a new fan, you can cut off the existing wires and splice them with the wires from a new fan. Make sure you get the polarity right of course.

I did it the easy way and just cut the wires and taped them up with electrical tape then took a standard 80MM fan and ran the cable out with the rest, worked quite well.

Not sure about PSU's with 1 fan though, Mine has 2 that sucks and blows I think but this one only has 1, is it suppose to blow out or suck air from the outside in?

The fans on a powersupply will never suck air in. They always blow air out. If the fan is on the back of the psu then it'll suck air from inside the PSU and blow it out the back. If the fan is on the bottom or the side where the wires come out then it'll suck air from inside the case and blow it inside the PSU and out the back.

You may want to replace the electrical tape, or at least put nylon wire ties around the tape, because it can come unravelled, and in a worst-case scenario that can let exposed copper wire touch high voltage and put high voltage into the computer.

That's not correct.

If it's on the back of the PSU it'll blow outward to exhaust hot air. If it's on the top of the PSU it will blow in to cool the PSU components, the air will then flow out the rear due to the increased internal pressure. Placement of the fan dictates flow.

Everything you need to make a clean job of it:

The person you quoted meant that the PSU will never suck air into the case. Read his entire description carefully; he said basically the same thing you did.

Yeah he did, didn't he. Sorry about that.

You'll have to cut me some slack. I work LOOOONNNNNNGGGG days and sometime switch into autopilot without noticing.
