Cutout or etch?

Opinion time. This isn't the final design, just a jumping off point, but it's going to be something like this.

I can either have a side panel cutout of this with plexi behind it, or put a larger window in and etch it in. I'm not worried about the relative difficulties of each one at this point, I'm just wondering which will look better. Either way, it'll be back lit via red CCFL, although if I etch it, I'll probably also mount a red LED on the edge and light it up like that.

With the black case panel, it would look (roughly) like this. I think it's doable, with some minor alterations so I don't have floating pieces. Now I just have to finish working the design and find the time to do it. If anyone else has anything else to say, you might as well. All comments are appreciated as long as they're not completely ignorant.

yeah i like that, so it would be clear plexi with red cold cathode? you could also do colored plexiglass and a white cathode, gives you a few more color choices, there is some nice blood red plexi i have used before.

I guess I could do that. There wouldn't be a point to using clear plexi, as it's not going to serve much use as an actual window. I don't know anything about colored acrylic though, would it be easier and/or cheaper to use something like theater gel or a tint and get a similar result?

Blood red plexi might work, as the general unrefined theme of the case is going to be Death, so I guess that might help.

theater gells would prbably be a lot more expensive than the plexi. Colored plexi is usually 5-7$ a square foot, Tap plastics has it but you have to call them to order it, they will cut a piece to size for you and charge by the foot 2 sq ft should be plenty.

That price probably doesn't include what it would cost to ship, does it? I don't have ANY plastics distributors anywhere even remotely close to here, so I'm limited to what I can find online.

Do you happen to have pics of the one you used the blood red plexi for, or is it one of the projects on your website? I'm interested in what it actually looks like.

use ebay for cheap plexiglas/acrylic/lexan

a lot of those sellers on ebay sells big scrap pieces from projects that companies do that are leftover and they sell it online super cheap

Here's something interesting I found out tonight. A guy I used to be in a band with was at my current band's show tonight, and he got a job as a machinist a couple months ago. His shop has a laser cutter. He's going to see how cheap he can get it done for. Hells yeah!!!

hmm...I vote for cutting it out of the panel, and instead of using colored plexi, use clear and frost it and edge light it...would look pretty sick I think. but the blood red plexi is a good idea too..
