I am looking for a game that I can play with my wife. Something similar to a rollercoaster tycoon - simcity (ish) game where we can play as opposing amusement park/city trying to battle for visitors/citizens.

Any ideas anyone?

MineCraft.

You won't regret it ('till it's too late; it is super-addictive). I know a few couples that are playing this together actually - it's a great creative game you guys can play and build all kinds of interesting stuff (including roler-coasters). And if you want it to be non-violent, you can turn off all the enemies in the difficulty settings and it becomes completely non-threatening. :)

Edit - I just understood the part where you wanted to be able to compete against eachother... hmm... minecraft is mostly a colaberative game, but I guess you can always just grief on eachother's buildings if you want to make things more interesting. :p

Rollercoasters are far more scary :)

There's an older game called SimTower that was pretty fun. Could compete for highest tenant capacity and income ratios. :)

Off the top of my head:
Dawn of Discover (Need the expansion for multiplayer)
and an older game called Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom.

Both are multiplayer city builders and me and my GF enjoyed both. If I remember when I get home I'll check to see what else we played in this genre. In emperor the interactions between the players is kinda limited. Dawn (Anno 1701) works really well in multiplayer, allowing coop or vs and shared bases.

Hmm something like Anno might suit you, it's sort of like multiplayer sim city but simplified, you can build towns and you need to harvest resources and turn them into goods for your citizens, there's a level of fighting and territory control late game.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I would think these types of competitive, cutesy games would be a good niche market but I guess they are harder to find than I thought.

Yeah, it's a tough genre. There aren't that many games in it to begin with, and then trying to find good multiplayer makes it the choices really slim.

Grand Ages: Rome was pretty good but the multiplayer was somewhat lacking.
The Civilization series as was suggested is also pretty good. The genre is pretty close. Civ IV was well polished and the multiplayer works really well.

It's not the same genre but me and my gf had a blast playing Saints Row 2 coop. It's extremly buggy but if you can get past that, it's just good fun driving around causing mayham together.

Monopoly tycoon was one of the funnest non-violent multiplayer games i have played

Screw it... have her play WoW. She will get addicted and you'll be able to game with her.
