custom star wars memory stick

Something I built as part of a mod for a company that helped me out with some supplies (I'll be shipping it to them shortly - this a a sneak preview of sorts)...

Take standard PEZ dispenser

and remove the back "hook" & smooth it over.

Then take a small USB memory stick

(actually not this one, but something similiar).

Make a rubber mold, fill with resin & dye, insert USB memory stick and come up with this:

finally, tweak the icons and your system sees

Pretty cool, eh?

This was a lot easier, quicker, and reproduce-able than my last custom memory stick.

Awesome! How durable is it though? Those things get hit around a lot. I also want a keyring!

How do you actually make the mold and such?

It's very durable - the whole thing is solid resin. Basically, the only real way to damage it would be to run over it with a car, twist it with a pair of pliers, etc. You could throw the thing against the side of a concrete building att day and just nick it up or mar the surface. Of course, the 3 silver spots are just painted on so you could scrape those off with your fingernail though... :p

Basically, I took the PEZ dispenser and covered the the hole in the back with tape, then mixed some vulcanizing rubber and poured it over the toy to make a negative mold. Finally, I mixed some resin with some polyurathane dye and poured it into the mold while holding the USB stick in place so just the silver piece stuck out of the mold. 60 seconds later the resin cured enough to let go of the usb drive, and 20 minutes later I removed it from the mold.

Some quick cleanup with a hobby knife and 3 spots of silver paint and we're done.
 
Ah, couldn't you just carefully bore out the bottom of a pez head, insert the drive and some form of resin or solid-drying putty, and be done with it?

In theory, yes.

*) If I did this, I would be at the mercy of whatever glue I use and depend on it not to break down, discolor, of cause other problems. The way I did it, the memory stick will never come out of the resin unless you dremel the resin away.

*) I can make as many copied as I want, and they will all be (close to) identical.

Anyone want to buy one? :D
