i have been planning this out for a while, but just recently got the money to actually do it. my plan is to combine a computer and a desk into one unit so that my computer case will actually also be my desk. i have many ideas panned out, but im not going to give away any yet. i expect to have the complete thing done in the next 7-14 days.

the pictures that i am posting are just of the frame of the desk. you can look at it and take a guess where all the components are going if you like.

update: added some plywood to the frame. there is still more plywood going to be added. and dont worry if it looks a little sloppy, it is all going to be covered over.

i am gonna try and get the rest of the plywood on tomorrow. than over the next couple days im going to set it up to move the computer components into it.... just keepin you guys update

as you can see, i really suck with a dremel. it took me about 3 hours to cut that one hole. i already broke 4 dremel bits and i only have one left. does anyone know if there is a special high durability dremel bit for cutting wood? will buying a 1/4" bit still give me the same accuracy in cutting as the 1/8"?

Man, go out and buy a cheapo jigsaw. It would cost like $20 and save you a world of time/heartaches

i tried using a jigsaw, it didnt work very well. i ended up breadking the blade :-D

u can see the jigsaw in one of the pictures above. it looks like its from 1940 or somethin. it seems to cut fine though. would buying a new one do me any good?
 
Yep, the blades snap - it is "one-of-those-things". Just use a drill to make your corners and jigsaw from there. Using a Dremel to cut thick wood is silly (and makes a mess as you have seen)
 
i bought a new jigsaw and it works like a dream

ive gotten a good bit of work done since the last post, i will add pictures later. but someone told me that using IDE cables longer than 18" will corrupt the data. the cables i plan on using are 36", will this be ok. he probebly just has no idea what hes talking about, but i figured it would be best just to ask.

also, if anyone has any experience with a longer IDE cable such as the 36 inchers, what is the distance between the two connectors at the end. i figure i will need it to be at least 9" for this to work.

And about the IDE cables, why would they sell them that long if its just gunna corrupt data? Doesn't make sense to me...

Well, people sell compaqs... and guns.. so it doens't necessarily have to make sense :p

(if you disagree with that comment, lighten up, just a cheap jab)

IIRC the IDE spec IS 18", but you'll probably be able to get away with it.
 
18" is the standard. Once you go longer than that you run the risk of getting coruppted data. That doesn't mean you will get corrupted data, just that as you get longer you have a higher chance of something getting coruppted. If you need custom lengths between connectors I'd suggest buying some 80 pin cable and connectors and then making the cables yourself. I dont have a link for where you can buy that stuff but I'm sure some one arround here does. GL man, looks sweet so far.

im not running hard drives off of the longer IDE cables, just cd-roms. so if there was some data corruption would the computer recognize that and just request for it again? or would it totally screw up whatever im doing?

the desk is not being painted. i dont really want to say too much, because im not absolutely certain how i am going to do it. but i am planning on buying ceramic tile and making a nice bathroom-looking desk.
 
I don't know about the data corruption with the opticals, my guess would be that it wouldn't re-ask for the information because the computer has no way of knowing it is geting bad data in the first place. Again don't take me at my word for any of that cause I'm just speculating. As for tile as a desk top surface...I'm gonna have to say no. If you want to use that surface for anything other that setting stuff on I'd suggest using something else. A laminate for instace. Tile is just a bad workstation surface in my opinion.

i like those alot. i only chose to do tile because my brother lays tile for a living and he said he could help me out with it. but that formica stuff looks pretty nice. i never saw a price quote on website, about how much will it cost for around 20 square feet? what kind of place could i go to locally to buy it locally (we have home depot / lowes / various other little tile and hardware stores)?

i think buying something like the formica would be alot easier, lighter, and more durable than tiling it. if anyone has ever worked with this stuff please tell me what you think.

You can find formica at pretty much any hardware store just ask for it. as for price, as far as I know it's like <$20 per sheet. (Don't quote me on that;) )
 
i would practice before doing to final desk because one it is glued down it is a pain in the ass to get back off sand then put it on again. so measure trice cut once.;)
 
I used to install formica for a kitchen remodeling company. The proper way to install formica is to start with a piece that is apx 1/2 inch larger in any given direction than what is needed. This means that it would hang over all 4 sides by at least 1/2 inch. There is a special glue that is used in securing the formica that is applied to both the desk (in this case) and to the underside of the formica. After the glue becomes very sticky, place a bunch of dowel rods apx. 6 inches across the desk to prevent the formica from touching the desk. Properly position the formica and slowly, one at a time starting from the middle of the desk, remove the dowel rods allowing the two glued surfaces to make contact. After all the dowel rods have been removed, use a rubber roller to apply pressure to all surface areas (be carefull around the areas of overhang so you don't break it) to assure proper contact and to work out any air pockets. Let this dry and cure for as long as the directions tell you. Now, use a router to trim the 1/2 inch overhang off of the desk and you are ready for the sides. Some people like to do the sides first, and then the top, others the top first.
 
That was the best description I've ever read on installing formica (not that I read a lot of them), but it's really well written. Thanks for the tips. That might come in handy one day for me as well!

the 2 sheets of 4x8 5/8" plywood was $58+tax. friggin rediculous price for a couple sheets of plywood. the 2x4s were like $30 total. the cost in tools and broken saw/dremel bits is around $50. so overall its been pretty cheap.

i like to have the option of playing a 5 on 5 game of basketball on top the desk. :D seriously though, yea the wood was a bit of an overkill, but its better to be safe than sorry.
 
Nice looking desk. I will try to get pictures of the desk I am building and put them up sometime this weekend. I am about done with it. I have yet to see the staining. I let my Dad do that (the desk is at the 'rents)!! He is bored and needs something to do!

i realized that the floppy drive is going to need a 4 foot IDE cable, this is the kind of stuff that happens when you planned. my plan is to not even use a floppy drive. if i ever need one i could buy a usb floppy. i am going to use that section where the floppy drive was going to be, to put the on/off spst switch and the LED lights. the piece of plywood that i cut to put the 5.25 and 3.5 bays in isnt going to be visible when the desk is complete, so i just did a half assed job.

just keeping you guys updated. thanks for the tips. and if anyone has a link on how to extend an IDE cable, i would find it pretty useful. i've been so busy lately its been hard to find time. most weekdays i am gone from 7am to 9:45pm, and on the weekends i always have plans, parties, friends, homework.
