I am looking to build a gaming machine for my little brother. He wants a P 4 but at his budget of $300, that's not feasible. So I assume I would have to go with an Athlon processor. Can anyone give me some ideas for a machine for this type of application? Again, it doesn't have to be an awesome machine, just something he could play Half-Life, Battlefield, etc.

Is this the original Half Life or HL2 and BF2 etc...? If its the latter, Im not sure if its possible

CPU:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103377 100.00 Athlon XP

About 257 Before Taxes, but you still need an OS and software...and a monitor if you wanted one of those, but I mean, is a monitor really a necessary part of a computer?
Opticals: http://

I'm not so sure. I think he plays games like Team Fortress, basically online shooters.

best thing I could get put together is above, I'm sure somebody will come in and tel lme how wrong all of that is though :p

edit: Oh, I forgot to add in optical drives, just put in one combo burner/reader, should probably be around 20 dollars. did you need speakers too? And Mouse/KB?

I'm not worrying about peripherals for now. I have spare keyboards and mice. Thanks for the specs though.

Do you have a hard drive and CD-Rom he can use? If not this is going to be pretty difficult.

Edit:
Antec case w/ 350W - $62
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16811129149

Chaintech nf2 ultra 400 - $53
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813152045

AMD Duron 1.6A (great overclocker) - $41
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819104159

512MB Crucial DDR2700 - $40
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820145485

Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM - $47
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822140133

ATI Radeon 9000 64mb (pretty much same thing as 8500) - $30
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814102566

Dynatron 60mm HSF - $6
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16835114005

After shipping at the egg it's about $311. I'm sorry there really isn't a lot you can do with $300. I went with the Chaintech mobo because it will be more reliable than the PC Chips mobo and this case comes with a fan. I'm sure if you order your parts from more than just Newegg you can get it a little cheaper.

What are you thinking? Dont buy an effing Athlon XP, yuck. Even the 32-bit semprons with on-die mem controllers are MUCH better! 300$ for a gaming rig is asking a bit much, my little brother's rig i built for him is great (3100+, 9500 Pro, 2x256 Ultra) But that was with extra parts, 300$ brand new is stretching it a bit.

This is much better:

POWMAX CP769PL-6 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 400W Power Supply - Retail
Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
CHAINTECH SK8T800 Socket 754 VIA K8T800 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
SAPPHIRE 100577-GN-F Radeon 9550 256MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM
crucial 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Unbuffered System Memory Model CT6464Z335.8T - OEM
AMD Sempron 2600+ Palermo 333MHz FSB Socket 754 Processor Model SDA2600BABOX - Retail

Total Beforce Tax: 307.00$ USD

And all you need to add is a CDROM drive. An on-die memory controller will help with gaming allot, a 256MB video card for bigger textures, and only 512 RAM, but more can be added later.

I was going to suggest the sempron but you just go over budget if you use a decent case and motherboard.

To the OP: DO NOT use that powmax PSU unless you really don't mind loosing some of that hardware. That 1.6a Applebred will OC to 2+Ghz easy.

Also, If you're going to go for his setup, ditch the 256MB 9550. The card is to slow to even bother with. I would go for a faster card with maybe 128mb of ram.

A) There is no better card with 128MB of ram

B) Why would ANYONE spend 90$ in 4 year old hardware? Thats pointless. That powmax PSU is fine for general and un-stressed use. Yes generic PSU's are 'worse' than others, but they do the job, i have numerous ones running 24/7.
