why most pci-e video cards so slow? is it not pci-e supposed to be a much faster slot? what's the mystery?
 
What do you mean slow? You can purchase an x800xt in pci-e currently, by the end of Oct you should be able to find 6800's and 6600's in pci-e, I doubt there is anyone who thinks those cards are slow.
 
In terms of core clock speeds, it does seem that the pci-e versions are often clocked slightly lower than their agp counterparts, but this may be for differences in the interface or the architecture. Performance-wise they are just about equal.

When it comes to the slot itself, pci-e > agp all day long, but the extra bandwidth is not utilized with any of the current games unless you are running super high resolutions at full detail.

pci-e has a lot of growing up to do, very much like 64-bit capability.
 
PCI-E is starting off about the same way that SATA did. It's getting shot down by numerous people and the main problem is that there is nothing on the market that can take advantage of the extra bandwith. Look at what SATA is doing today, and that'll probably give you a timeline of products which will utilize this extra bandwith and will not have counterparts in AGP 8X form.

i'd compare PCI-E to when AGP8X was introduced for the first time, or 256MB video cards

the technology is sound, there just isn't any games pushing it yet
 
Simple fact is your latest greatest video cards couldnt even keep a agp4x pipe filled. The benefeit of it right now is the latency over agp, and ability to have 2 or more work concurently such as 2 video cards. I wouldnt expect to see any video card capable of pushing past the agp 8x bandwidth for a couple more years.
 
One thing pushing PCI-e out the door now is opening up that door to allow really cool things to happen.

Before the AGP8X bus really was limiting.

PCI-E has the potential to offer much more now, they can do some really cool stuff with it like real time HDTV editting, using the GPU for more generalized computations, allowing the GPU to do tasks such as physics and AI calculations etc... the door is open now, all we need are the aps to utilize it
