So I bought a 2560x1440 monitor on woot the other day and my 6950 2GB is struggling to keep up in quite a few games at the graphical quality I want/like.

I was really pumped up about the 290 series, but even the basic R9 290 is over $500 now, which makes me want to just get a GTX 780. Basically, my question is would a GTX 780 be worth buying for $500 at this point for gaming at 2560x1440? I kind of want to just stick it out, but who knows how long prices will remain high.

The performance gap between the 290 and 780 gets larger with higher resolutions, but it's probably not worth sitting around waiting for god knows how long... Unless you really want an AMD card.
Otherwise just get a 780 and don't look back.

Keep in mind the 290x MSRP is $549 so if you really want to wait, being able to get one of those at that price is probably the best deal atm.

You can find 780s sometimes in the low $400s range (seen a few like $420 recently.)

I'd wait till a decent deal drops (hopefully within a few days after christmas) and then sell your 6950 for around $125.

Stock vs stock R9 290 is going to be performing a bit better at that resolution.
Overclocked, 290 @ 1075 is about equal with GTX780 @ 1250, slight edge to GTX780 at those clocks.
If you get an aftermarket quality PCB GTX780 you could push a bit above 1300mhz, example would be the MSI GTX780 Lightning.

Well, from what I've been looking at the 290s (not x's) are going for $520~, 290x are easily $600+ on Amazon right now.

The 780 is good from the reviews I'm reading, I just don't want to feel like I'm limited in a year after buying a $500 card. I haven't seen a 780 lower than $480~ so I was planning to just get the MSI lightning version if I'm going for a 780 as it is only $520 right now and has a great cooler.

If I get a 780 it will almost certainly be the lightning. I want OC headroom.

Gtx 780s are all over the place under 500. If you want a ref one, you can find em right now cheaper than most overpriced 280x's and that's usually with an included game bundle.

Where at? I'm only seeing right at $500 on Amazon and Newegg, so springing for the Lightning at $30 is worth it in those price ranges.

I've been seeing them on techbargains almost each day. Yes, the lightning is a great card. When I was looking to nab a pair of them they went out of stock.

I don't think its that hard to get a r9 290x at msrp, its the 290 that's blown up in price. id say get a 780 on sale, your 6950 should sell fast
