After pouring over reviews on Newegg and Amazon ( Amazon is full of fake reviews ), I am kind of at a loss as to what to think about current external HDDs.

I am looking for a good 4-6TB external drive that is going to be reliable and decently quick.

USB 3.0 is the only real required connection.

I do not remember seeing any type of data other than anecdotal evidence on the reliability of external drives. That is except for the 3TB Seagates that blacblaze pulled the drive from the external and installed in their servers with horrendous results.
 
I am currently using a 5TB WD MyBook for a little extra network storage separate from my NAS unit which is working rather well. I'd recommend it.

I have both. The bottom one is nice if you want to not have to remove 6 screws or whatever to get the drive out but the other is sturdy as hell.

Fake reviews on newegg? Have proof? I have read a few hundred of them and never seen one i would deem fake...plenty of crappy ones.

I meant fake reviews on Amazon.

If this was for me, I would use an enclosure in a heartbeat, but this is for somebody else and I don't want to have to deal with tech support if the drive or enclosure fails.
But, I may end up going that route anyway..

Both of those enclosures you linked to say they only support up to 3TB.

I do have some old 2.5" mybooks around the office. Never had any trouble with them except one that died when it was dropped onto a hard floor from desk height.

Will probably end up going with that since I really hate Seagate and their destined to fail drives.

It is either that or an enclosure and an HGST drive, but that would end up being about 60-70 more than the 4TB mybook.
 
My Books seem to work fine here at work. No problems with the dozen or so we have. Although these days we are using more of the elements models and thinking of switching to 256/512 GB USB sticks for some of our usage. At home I have a pair of HGST 4TB Touro drives. They contain Hitachi Deskstar 5K4000 drives. One of them was having a lot of disconnects (disappearing from the system after hours to days of inactivity) on linux till I swapped the power supply with one from a mybook (very few problems since then). I use the 4TB Touro drives for parity disks for snapraid.

they both will require support and the first one is far less likely to break.
