Quad core, it looks like the q6600 still reigns.

I have a buddy who's trying to get online with us to do some modest gaming (warhammer, Team Fortress 2, COD:4, etc) and I'm looking at what is the best upgrade/replacement path for him. Are the e7200s still the value darling? I was thinking about putting a Xiggy on it and taking it over 3ghz for him. Should I go with an e8400 instead?

The guy is like an E2 atm, a) his pay scale ain't great and b) the "beer fund" is taking up an inordinate percentage of his total funds, so I'm trying to give him the cheapest picture I can here.

Also, what would you recommend for cards? I'm thinking 4850, but I hate the stock coolers. gt260 is probably too pricey. Should I recommend an 8800 or something?

I'm thinking he won't game at much more than 1400x900. 1600x1200, tops. His monitor is still pretty old stuff, but I imagine he'll upgrade it too, at some point in time.

I'd say the E7200 is still the budget chip of choice, the E21x0's are still a viable option for the budget-budget choice. With games, performance shouldn't differ much between the E7200's and more expensive chips as long as you get 3+ GHz.

If he's max resolution is 1600×1200, then I'd lean towards the 4850. It should be the best performance per dollar at the resolution.

E7200
Xigmatek HDT-S1283
Asus 9800GT which is a 8800GTS 512MB card in disguise. 129$ after a 20$ MIR
 
If you don't have a local Fry's or Microcenter, your best bet right now is the E5200.
 
E5200 for less than under $100
E7200 for just a tad more than $100.

I have the E7200, and it really should be a 3.2GHz chip. Labeling it as a 2.5 is an embarrasement. It should hit 3.0 with no troubles. Mine can do 3.2 at 1.10v.
