What do you recommend to run on Server 2008 R2 to manage storage in a home environment? (WHS 2011 or Raid is not an option)
  1. nothing - use Libraries to combine content, manage storage and redundancy manually
  2. FlexRaid
  3. DriveBender beta
  4. something else?

I'd give flexraid a go. Odditory (respected forum member) is holding 100 TB together with it. Moreover, he seems quite happy with it too:D.

Obviously, it will depend on your needs also. Perhaps you should tell us more on that.

I have about 7TB right now but will grow to ~10TB. About half of that (the essential stuff) is backed up on external disks.

I tried to setup FlexRaid but there are so many versions (some of which are set to auto expire) and lots of conflicting or out of date information on the forums. I like the idea, perhaps I just need to spend more time experimenting.

You should give unRaid a look too. It is similiar to FlexRaid but each has its pros/cons and each is more suited to different users.

I'm running 12 HD on my unRaid box, about 13.5TB of possible storage, about 9-10TB of data, mostly our ripped DVDs and CDs.

There is also stablebit drivepool and Datacore Harmony which are both in beta. Similar to drivebender.

I'm waiting on flexraid Live myself.

Thats a lot of rotational mass to have running in your boxes! lol

It is largely about redundancy with me. That is why I do not really like unraid because it allows only one disk to fail. Yeah sure, if a 2nd fails you only lose what's on there but still. I like to stand losing 2 drives on every 12 I'd use.

Am I alone in thinking that it is rather odd to pay for a software RAID application, with tiers based on the size of your storage, that requires a USB dongle and whatnot?...
