I am thinking about building a new computer and want to overclock it. I currently have an AMD Opteron 170 (see sig) and want to go back to Intel CPU. I seem to like ASUS, but that is not the only brand I will look at. I have not kept up with the latest technology. What is the hot M/B and cooler (for air cooling) these days?
I am willing to spend about $250 or so for the M/B.

In that range you're looking at a Intel X38. For like 50-100 bucks more you could get a X48.

when you say intel m/b do you mean intel chipset or a mainboard for an intel cpu? for $250 you could get a 780i board.

Sorry, I meant an Intel chipset. Another $50 or $100 more for the motherboard is not out of the question, provided there is a benefit to doing that.
Also, I am looking at maybe using an E6850 for the CPU and would also like suggestions for the best cpu cooler, although this will probably open a can of worms (at least it used to).

From what I've seen, the ASUS Maximus Formula is pretty much the best out there. That said, the difference between high-end X38 boards is so tiny that you can expect to get great overclocks out of any of them.
