I'm thinking about picking up a 4890 sometime between now and mid-summer. These $180-190 deals have me wondering if I should pull the trigger now or wait a little while.

I'm not currently playing anything that overly taxes my 8800GT so the decision is purely economic.

In the past I would have bet my life that GPU prices would be lower in 1-2 months but recent processor purchases have me wondering...

Around the holidays I jumped on some great CPU deals. They were damn good prices but if you had asked me then if better deals would come along by mid-May I would have bet my life on it. Well, they haven't. Not by a long shot.

I'm wondering if these $190 4890 deals are going to be the best we see for a while. It seems that there are certain times of year and/or certain market conditions that elicit killer deals the likes of which will never been seen again during a product's lifecycle. Is this what we're seeing with these $180-190 4890 deals?

I suppose it has something to do with the release date of R8xx too. Is there any concrete news on that? I've read mid-summer, fall, xmas...nothing definitive.

I think Sapphire is a decent brand for ATI. Ewiz is okay, but I hate their shipping policies.

They won't ship to address address not on file with your credit card company. I found this a bit odd since I often have items shipped to my work addess from ZipZoomFly, Directron, NewEgg, and many others without any issue. But Ewiz won't do it.

Normally if UPS tries to deliver a package to an address that is incorrect, they call the recipient and tell them they can come to the warehouse to pick up the package with a proof of identification. However ewiz tells UPS not to do this with their packages.

I accidently put in the wrong address (had started to use my work address, then realized I had to use my home address, but didn't change the street address from work to home). UPS called me up, I went down there the next day only to find out ewiz made UPS send the package back.

I called Ewiz, I was told I would need to wait, call them back once they got the card back. Then pay for new shipping.

Overall it cost me twice as much to ship the card and it took almost two weeks to get it. Fortunately it was a really killer deal on the 4870X2, so even with the extra shipping, it was still cheaper than anywhere else. But I wish they would really lighten up on the shipping rules.

I would not purchase anything from them unless it was a really really good deal. Though fortunately for them, they do often have some really really good deals.

So if you are absolutely sure you typed in you address right and are not trying to ship to an address not on file with you credit card company/bank, then they are actually pretty decent. My bad experience just soured me towards them.

I think Sapphire from eWiz is the current best at about $190 AR. So yea, I'd be relegated to a bottom tier cardmaker at those prices. I'm not sure how much I care though so long as I don't get totally screwed with a dead card and no RMA. I do not want to be out $190!

I use my gaming machine for gaming and nothing else. I wouldn't be able to game until I received an RMA but otherwise life would be fine.

I won't spend $200+ on the 4890. I'd go with the 4870 instead. It looks like I could get a 1gb 4870 from MSI or XFX for around $170 AR. That's a tough call when the additional cost of a pizza fetches a 4890!

But all that is ancillary to my original question. What I really want to know is will I be able to snag a 4890 (bottom tier or not) for $190 all summer long or is this a mid-May only phenomena?
 
I have a 8800GTX and I'm itching for a 4890 or 4870.... I want to wait to see if prices get lower yet. I just ordered a Dell 3007 so I'm thinking of two cards for crossfire.

The wait will continue I guess. :(

Yeah, i have some personal infos from a few local ATi AIB distros friends here, they say RV 790 can very easily drop in price if the new ATi GPU generation comes in, the GPU yield is very2 good, GDDR5 price is dropping (especially for the lower binned types), and the OEM makers of the card charge less and less for the card BOM since the cards are truly matured in manufacturing process and the development cost would be depreciated quickly.

Sounds like it's probably best to wait until July to see if rv870 materializes.
