Heya,

I was just browsing the AMD forum (I know, I know, shame on me) but there was a thread showing the new 65nm Dempsey wiping the floor with equivalent Opterons.

Considering the top end Dempsey is even more of a powerhouse than the top end upcoming Presley P4EE, and that it is likely to actually be cheaper ($850 or so) why aren't more people excited about it? Especially considering you can run 2 of them instead of being stuck with just one P4.
 
so where was intel hiding this one! Netburst still has some life, I'll be damned!

P4's have always been a decent match for the A64's. However, the reason Dual DC Xeons are dominated has more to do with the single shared FSB bottleneck. The Blackford platform solves this by making dual independant FSB's, thereby alleviating the bandwidth (and increasing the frequency to 1066, and later 1333). It's more to do with the platform than the Xeons themselves.

I'll give you that the Xeon is easily as much a processor is the Opteron price for price, but you have to admit the Opteron kicks the Xeons ass clock for clock.

Now with 65nm we Intel fans don't have to worry about that as much, as I'm sure these chips will OC and scale in clock freq. very easily. I am also glad to see that Intel is addressing the memory controller issue....

Can you imagine the beauty of a Dempsey system with a HT style bus?
 
I can tell you why I don't talk about Dempsey - I hadn't even heard of it until now. Guess I was just too swept up in waiting for Conroe and its ilk.
 
the boards might get really expensive to buy. Also, FBDIMM is not prevelant and costs a lot of money. Many are probably waiting for Sossaman or Woodcrest.

BTW, check Annadtech for benchmarks. Dempsey uses a lot of power, but is really fast.

I'm not sure that workstations and servers rely on overclocking to get performance and stability. Considering the sheer power of these things will inhibit the power density (i.e. how much processing power you can put in a given space) I don't think you'll want to push them too far beyond spec ;)

An HT style bus would be nice, but what we're seeing is more similar to the Alpha EV6 bus, so, basically Intel is now catching up to the Athlon MP for server bussing.
Basically what I'd call this is "Netburst Unleashed."
The performance is phenomenal, but I'd like to see a fully decked out Dempsey go against a fully decked out 8-way 885 and see how much each system costs, etc. Xeons go up to 4P, don't they? Opterons with the Horus chipset from Sun will be doing 32P (and if dual core, they'll have 64 execution cores :D ) next year, so that will be interesting (though Horus won't be too useful to anybody except users of Sun's OS due to the system having a metric ton of memory controllers)

1.Horus is made by Newisys , not SUN.
2.Xeon go up to 32P since 4 years now...
3.Horus scales poorly beyond 8 sockets.Maybe a new version will fix that ( not sure if it's worth to bother though )

Sossaman is actually a Yonah processor. I wonder if Intel will package the Sossaman processor differently then the standard Yonah. Being that Yonah and Merom are pin to pin compatable, users can upgrade their Yonah processors for Merom ones.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a dual core notebook processor that fits into a 1U server. My only problem is why did Intel release a 32-bit only CPU for a server??? Now we have to wait until Merom to get 64-bit.

I hear it was for power constraints. Maybe they didn't feel like modifying the core anymore. They spent like two years on Merom/Conroe. I think Intel also didn't feel that it was needed

I know Newisys made it, but Sun is the most likely company to manufacture systems with it. I should have emphasized "Opterons on the Horus chipset from Sun" as in the whole package.

Also, the microarchitecture of the Pentium M is called Banias, FYI. Banias wasn't only the name of the first P-M.
