Hey guys -

Well if you follow my posts, last week i posted about information on a raid 5 setup.

I have finalized it and added it to my current wishlist for my next computer, may be around chrismas time may hold off till the new M2 socket if that is early 2006.

But anyways.

Right now, after reasearching i have came up with:

LSI Raid 5 6port SATA - http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16816118011

and

5 x 250gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 -

---------

Opinions on that?

Okay now for my main guestion, the reason why i posted.

If i do that system i will have 1 TB b4 formatting of data.

Usually in all the systems i do, i have 1 partiton for os and another partition for games and storage.

Is this okay to do so in a raid 5 or will i result in any slow downs?

Should i get an addition sata drive to run as teh system drive? I would prefer to keep the costs down,

Your system is going to see the array as one large drive.
It's not going to know that it's made of 5 drives, so you can partition it any way you want.
The seperate drive for OS is not a bad idea.
It will let you continue to use the computer if the array fails for any reason.
And it doesn't have to be a big drive. $50 will get you a 40-80GB that you can use for that. And plug it into your motherboard's SATA controller. That way you could move the array to a new computer when ever you wanted too.

You are spending around $800.00 on drives and controller and you want to keep costs down?????

Luck

well im spending like 2200 on the whole system, and not using extra harddrive, saves on power, space, and cost.

if i make a partition 100gig and 900gig. and i do move hte raid to a new system i can just plug it in and reload windows on the 100gig and all the info on the 900gig will be their?

will i see any speed decrease this way?

That should work....
But you won't be able to have any apps on the 900GB partition when you do that.

That windows registry thing wont know what they are after you reload windows on the 100GB
