Hmm.. With Dell releasing the new XPS that supports PCI-e, and the new AA8 by abit that support native PCI-e, it looks as if the new technology is hear. What I am curious about is wether or not there will be a sig. leap in performance from AGP 8x to PCI-e.

I currently have a BFG 6800u on pre-order from BB, but should I cancel and just wait for the PCI-e version to come out?

Are there any games that you NEED the 6800u for right now? Any downsides to waiting?

There will be no immediate performance increase. AGP 8X's bandwidth isn't fully utilized. PCI-E is more of a transitional product. After the chipsets mature and a few new native PCI-E chipsets come out start expecting an improvement.

In fact in HardOCP's own review the i875P Canterwood based system was just as fast and in some cases faster than i925 W/PCI-E using the same video card.

To be totally honest, waiting is not a problem, but the new cards are just sooo nice... sigh.. think the pci-e version will be a larg enough improvement to justify holding out?? :D

From the benchmarks at anandtech it looks like PCI-e has nothing to offer the current generation of cards. Performance is no better with PCI-e than AGP8x on the 6800/X800 series. Next year's cards might be a different story, though.

Some website recently did a review of various AGP speeds to see if PCI express would really make a difference. For the most part, AGP 2x was adequate. AGP 4x offered a slight performance boost and AGP 8x was pretty much pointless.

I don't remember the link or where I got it from, but I'm sure if someone was really interested in it they could find it easily.
