History:

My 2nd casemod ever was to build my aluminum cube; you can look at the pics 3/4s of the way down Here these pictures are actually of the second revision of the original case. Since then it had some minor mods such as a better fanbus, and sleeved wires. However I got tired of having such a large case, and when it was time to upgrade next, I bought a very nice Kingwin aluminum case. It has been sitting in the shop, half empty since then. Finally after seeing PS-Rage's massive file server, i decided to bring this out and build my own.

The Plan:
Build a 16 5.75" bay open frame computer to act as a massive fileserver.

Worklog:

To begin the case was not very square, having to do with my lack of patience and need of a computer at the time. So the project was started by disassembling the whole thing and filing down all the edges, till they were flat and square with each other.

Next the case was reassembled and measurements were taken to figure out the best mounting positions. Using angle of various sizes from Home Depot, the Drive supports were constructed, this taking most of the time, as they are all made to fit exactly.

Finally for the weekend, I test fit a MB (the one in the pic is a PII, not what I will be using) and a screw down angle was added for the expansion cards.

Plans:

The case will start with by having 10 removable HDD racks and a 8 channel RAID controller from www.surpluscomputers.com running on an Athlon 1800+. The HDDs will be slowly acquired through friends and sales, the whole thing will not be done all at once...

To Do:

Order parts (~$250)
Drill mount holes for HDD racks
Mount PSU(s)
Anything else...

looks pretty cool, are you going to leave it as an open frame? I think that would be cool
