do you need windows or a monitor? If not, that's a good price to work with...oh nvidia or ati or whichever?

It sounds like he would need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and such. If that is the case your right it will make it really hard to get a comp for $1000.

Take a look at this list:
AMD 3200+ Venice- $190

Epox EP-9NPAJ- $92.99

Samsung IDE DVD- $24

WD HD 120gig- $87

Cool Master RealPower 450W- $80

OCZ Premier Value 1GB- $83

Asus 6600GT PCI-e- $170

$727

Samsung 17” CRT- $124

Logitech Elite Keyboard- $32

Logitech MX510- $28

Logitech z-3e 2.1- $55

$966

if you've got a friend or someone you know with an extra monitor take that money and get a better graphics card...you'll run source great, if you're a source freak I'd recommend an x800xl if you can afford one.

There is no reason. This is a list that I made up for my friend and since I have had no trouble with my Epox board I recommended it to him.

1000$?

ATI X800XL
MSI nforce 4 Neo-F
A64 3200+
2x512MB Value RAM
Antec Case with 380w PSU
HD of your choice
DVD+-RW

800-900$

Yes, those two are just as good. And if you plan to overclock then get a different HSF and a DFI board.

Yup, that's pretty much what I just helped a friend build...works great.
