Counter-Strike: Source will see its first BETA released in the coming months to Cybercafe partners and then to Counter-Strike: Condition Zero owners. CS: Source's first BETA release continues the Counter-Strike tradition of public BETA tests. The first Counter-Strike had nearly a year and a half of BETA releases that practically changed the game from month to month (about Counter-Strike). CS 1.6 and Steam shared a nine month BETA session.

Valve's Doug Lombardi sent this to CS-Nation for release:

Starting later this summer, Valve will be conducting a limited-time beta of Counter-Strike: Source via Steam. The beta will first be open to subscribers of the Valve Cybercafé Program, and then extended to owners of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. The next installment of the world's number 1 online action game, Counter-Strike: Source blends CS' intense teamplay with the advanced technology of Valve's Source engine. For more information, please visit www.steampowered.com

CS-Nation was first informed of the existence of the BETA program late last night by CSN member nadomola, after he and top members of the South Korean CS community had caught wind of the story. Early and off-camera talk of the BETA program can be heard (barely) in the first of our recent GameMeca movie releases (after the 8 minute mark, mostly unintelligible).

from csnation.net

nice ploy by valve to get people to buy CZ if you ask me

what is the difference between the original counter strike, like 1.5 and counter strike source?

Basically what im asking is, what is counter strike source?

counter-strike: source is counter-strike on the half-life 2 engine. this means much better graphics, a better physics engine, better netcode, etc. cs on steroids, you might say. look around csnation and other cs sites for images and video of the game in action, it looks amazing.

I'm looking forward to CS:Source (I've purchased CS:CZ).
I wonder if the current exploits will be present...should be cool for the first week, till all the
a-holes start saturating the beta servers with their cheats.

So cs:source is not only going to be on hl2 engine but will also be playable on half-life1 or cz through steam

i dont understand what is confusing you. all hl/hl2 and mods are available through steam (or will be when they are released). just like you didn't have to buy hl1 if you bought cs retail, you wont have to buy hl2 to buy cs:source. the BETA coming out will be completely free and available to people who own cs:cz as well as LAN centers who license hl.

hl2 is a game AND an engine that you can make other games from. remember the original hl was a heavily modified q2 engine (did you need to purchase q2 in order to play hl??? NO).

I just watched the HL2/CS: Source vid on Fileshack. Now we know what's been taking them so long. Not only are they doing HL2, they've also been porting HL 1 and CS to their new engine. I'm just wondering how long we'll have to wait for a real sequal to CS.... I remember about 2 or 3 years ago seeing a video on the guy who made CS and it showed him coding CS2. It was supposed to have some pretty cool stuff in it as for player reactions and whatnot (sounded similar to Soldier of Fortune at the time). Anyone know what ever happed with this guy and his efforts on CS2?

Is there going to be 2 versions of css one for hl1 and one for hl2 and will they be playable against each other or will the hl2 people be playing just against people playing on hl2 and vice versa

i don't think i can explain this any better man. there is only 1 cs:source. you can obtain this game by buying half-life 2 when it comes out, or by purchasing it seperately. either way you get the same game (just like regular cs). it's not rocket science.

Am I the only one that thinks that CS on the source engine looks like crap? It seems all they've really did is port the physics engine. The textures and enviroments still look very damn Half life'ish and nowhere near HL2's graphics.

The models may look a bit better, but the lv's just really do still look like something out of HL if you ask me.

I heard that CS:Source and DoD:Source would have to be purchased seperately in addition to HL2. I don't know how accurate this information is, but if it's true, then Valve got their last dollar from me with the original HL release. Turning a profit is one thing; reaming your fanbase for wads of cash is another.

Edit: and I agree with Stiler. I watched a CS:Source video and looked at the screenshots, and the only differences from normal CS I could see were water effects and a few physics tricks. It was far from jaw-dropping, in other words.

I think all of us sitting here with ATI coupons should have been included in the beta. Bah I say.

Awhile back they said something about the players playing cs on hl1 would be able to download and play against the players playing on hl2 so I was asking if theres going to be a hl1 version of css since the cz are going to be able to beta test it, is it going to be an upgrade minus all the visuals and stuff or are they going to end up downloading a completely different game. ;)

I wouldnt doubt that they would do something like that. But it wouldnt matter to them if you didnt buy either because there will be people that will buy all three. Hell if I was them I would sell them all seperatley $50 for hl2 and $20 a piece for the mods :p

I just thought of something. Do you guys remember cz having better graphics in the screenshots and shit is there a possibility...................... cz beta testing it..........

The way I understand it is that you will get CS:Source if you buy HL2. I think that is pretty fair. Even if you did have to purchase it seperately, I don't think that it is unreasonable, as long as the price is reasonable like $20 as mentioned before. Valve has and is continuing to support the mods DoD and CS for nothing. Good business sense and additional support led them to purchase the assets too. Why would anyone expect (insist) that they start giving new content for free. To all those people, wake up. Developing, or even porting these games is not free for them, why should it be for you. Also, I don't really consider them mods anymore, but rather seperate products. In the end, it is up to them to develop something worthy of buying and people will speak with their wallets.

I also give them kudos too. I never intended to buy CZ, but might now to get in on the CS:Source beta. Okay Valve, at least you know it worked on me :) . However, I may never even play CZ.

This announcement begs the question:
If CS:S beta testing is supposed to start in late summer, does this mean HL 2 will be pushed back until after the beta testing is complete? I was under the impression that CS:S would be available when HL 2 was released, but after hearing this, maybe not.

I'm just hoping that the beta release and testing actually does some good for the game.

As noted above, cs 1.6 and Steam had a 9 month beta which changed very little for the good and ultimately ended up with a very buggy and not so great final product for all that testing. I think Valve ignored just about every suggestion made.

I'm hoping that cs:s can make the game the cs I used to love (but still play despite) and improve the netcode. If they can make it anywhere near the halo loading times I would buy anything they wanted.

Perhaps its not going to be the version which comes with hl2 (if hl2 comes with css) instead maybe a hl1 version\retail of it  time will tell I guess unless somebody who actually knows something wants to fill us in ;)

cs:source is it's own game. it stands by itself. there aren't 2 versions. you can buy the game and own it, or you can buy hl2 and it will come with it for free.

and whoever said cs:source doesn't look good is on CRACK. every map has been completely revamped. there are new player/weapon models. go back and watch video because i think you were seeing cs:cz and not source.

Which means 2 different version just like you could download cs or you could buy cs retail. Im not saying that they are two different games just 2 different versions and wanting to know if they are going to be beta testing the newer css with hl2 graphics or if theres perhaps a hl1 version in the making which is what there going todo a public beta for.

The word of CS Source first appeared on the net on the 12th of May when Shacknews posted that Half-Life 2's multiplayer will be Counter-Strike. In the beginning it was rumored that it would be Counter-Strike 2 but it later turned out that it would simply be Counter-Strike 1.6 ported to the Source (HL2) Engine, hence the name CS Source.

Still on the 12th it was stated by Gabe Newell that CS: Source would not be a free addition to HL2 but rather a fully blown retail product. In late June it was revealed in a video recorded by German magazine "PC Games" during a visit of the VALVe headquaters that CS Source will be available free for everyone who purchases Half-Life 2.

The video, next to some ingame CS Source action, features interviews with Jess Cliffe (CS co-creator) and Erik Johnson (VALVE employee). They say that CS Source is rather a next step in the CS development than a totally new product. A reason for the name being CS Source and not CS 2. At the release of CS Source there won't be any gameplay or other major changes compared to CS 1.6.

Thanks to the new engine the maps in CS Source will not be as limited as there are in the current CS version. Huge outside areas, cities or jungles are possible. Of course the physics engine will be of same importance as the new graphics, if not of more. They can affect the gameplay a lot. As seen in the PC Games video you can for example build barriers to stop enemies. VALVe is still looking into what kind of and how many physics objects can be placed into the maps.

If you actually looked at the cs source screenshots instead of blurry videos you would know the graphics arent improved much and the models are pretty much the same from what i've seen anyway

whatever. i don't see how you can look through all the pics and videos and say the graphics don't look much better. you are out of your mind.

and you still lack comprehension. there are not 2 versions of the game. there is ONE version with 2 means of getting it. it's not hl1 cs:source and hl2 cs:source. it's cs:source, PERIOD. ONE VERSION. You can download it or you can go to the store and buy it. you get the same game. ONE VERSION.

Wow, I don't think I've ever read threw a thread before and became more confused than I am now........

I think I'm just gonna wait for this damn thing to come out and see what the hell their gonna do..

A lot of whats being said right now is speculation and a lot of it will change when shit does start going down.

I'm sorry jager, but CS source doesn't look nearly anywhere as good as HL2 or anything.

The textures and enviroment all look sub par and like they are still being held back by the HL 1 engine somehow.

There are SOME improvements (a little on the models and physics and such) but as far as the enviroments and stuff it doesn't look anywhere as good as the source engine can push. Like they've been hurried on it and are just cutting some corners graphics wise to get it out the door faster.

I told you I looked at the screenshots. Try reading the thread next time.

I guess what throws me off is that the level environments are still low-poly in CS:Source. There's no added geometric detail, only higher-res textures. Thus it has the same square look as the current CS. I expected to see use of more hardware meshes to add detail rather than all BSP maps, but apparently they're just porting the old ones with better textures, water effects, and the physics engine.

You are exactly right, but there is a reason for this, they dont want to change the gameplay at ALL, THEY WANT THE SAME DAMN GAME ON THE SOURCE ENGINE SO THEY CAN DO MORE WITH IT IN THE FUTURE.

So yeah the graphics dont look nearly as good as hl2 b/c its just cs with higher poly models and improved textures/slightly imroved levels. This way the game will play exactly the same as cs1.6, I would imagine it feels the same and your skills in one will carry over 1:1 to the other.

They have already announced that they will be making maps which utilize the engine better ,like huge outdoor areas, jungles, copmlex cities .. etc (someone already said this in this thread i think) - > when they do this it will start to look better like hl2.

It hasent been brought up in this thread yet but before it does: CS: Source is NOT CS 2, CS 2 is beeing worked on and will be a different game (diff gameplay etc, we dont really know) CS 2 will probably be its own game which you buy, mabye it will be on the Source engine but we dont really know.

Again CS: Source is not a new game per say, its the same old CS just on the Source engine. (Very smart move by valve IMO, wouldnt it be sweet if doom 3 came with doom 1 and 2 on the doom 3 engine :D )

I'll probably be getting CS:CZ also for the Source beta, CZ is actually kinda cool, the graphics are alittle better and the updated maps are nice, plus the bots are hillarious. The deleted scenes i played sucked but at least they keep releasing more maps, which is nice.

I didn't say anything about changing gameplay. You can add a lot of detail to the standard CS levels without altering the gameplay at all, such as more detailed walls (cracks, vines, etc), trim, cracked or indented floors/roads, fancy railings, etc. All it takes is a little imagination and you can really dress up a level without altering the gameplay. It appears that Valve isn't bothering with any of that, though.

And how do you know this? I haven't heard a word from anyone about two versions of CS on the Source engine. Regardless of how many versions there will be, you can guarantee they'll all be on Source; Valve just finished the engine, and they'll likely be using it for a couple years before making any major changes.

So if I leave Steam running in the background will CS:Source (beta) just automatically appear?
(this is how steam is intended to work right)

It seems that Valve has been a little sketchy about whether or not you will have to buy CS:S, either by paying more for it to be packaged with HL 2 or standalone. From what everyone has posted and from what I remember of the press releases it does seem like they are hinting at it being sold, not making it freely available.

I would also agree that from the screenshots, the graphics do look improved but still seem low-poly. Even the gun models seem to be the same from the original CS.

it will probably occur the same way as the cz release did. steam will release a small update and those with cz will have the option of downloading the beta.

if you buy the full version of HL2, CS:Source will come with it. If you don't buy HL2 or only buy the "lite" version (single player only) you will have to purchase CS:S either at a retailer or through steam.

Lets see, everyone who didnt purchase CZ will now purchase it to play CS source. 30 bucks there, then the same crowd (those without cupons) will buy HL2 this fall.

thats 80 bucks over a large fanbase in the next 6 months.

I could not care less because I already have a prepurchase of HL2 and already have CZ so I get a game for the rest of the summer.

I bet its beta starts a few days after doom3 has gone gold.

All insult wars aside, it's "couldn't care less" people, not "could care less." K?

Right, anyway, there is a very good reason Valve doesn't want to change the gameplay of cs. There is very little wrong with it, except minor recent changes like that friggin shield, the gay hs script, and the fucking awp scope lag, which has gotten me killed way too many times. Aside from those things, it's still my favorite game and the only multiplayer I have kept playing over the years. If they can take the same game and make some improvements, I'll be happy, even if I have to buy the damn thing.
