Hello old friends. I have 2 computers that I've run CS:GO on. They're as follows:

Desktop

MSI motherboard
980X cpu @ 4 ghz
12gb corsair ram
256GB samsung evo ssd
1tb WD velociraptor game drive
corsair hx1000 power supply
2x Radeon R9 280X video cards in crossfire

Laptop

Asus laptop
core i7 2630QM quad core
16 gb of ram
geforce gtx 460m
samsung pro boot drive
samsung 840 pro game drive

i play GO at 4k on the desktop, and average 145 fps.

my laptop gets less FPS, but runs infinitely better than my far more powerful desktop

so what the fuck?

My guess is microstutter from the CrossFire setup.

Try disabling crossfire first, and if fluidity improves, then my guess would probably be correct.

Read up on frametimes and you will see that FPS not always = smoothness/fluidity.

This is probably why people always say that a powerful single card is the most hassle-free if you can do it.

Also, check for minimum FPS in addition to the average. Is your minimum FPS lower on the desktop than on the laptop?

no my minimum FPS was around 60-70. it's constant "warping", it's not CFX microstutter, it's like i'm warping around the screen like a bastard

Yeah dude, the first thing you should do when you have video issues is turn Crossfire off. How hard is that to understand?

i could be wrong but a single 280x should easily maintain 120fps all by itself. CF should not really be needed in this case:)

If your using crimson drivers monitor everything important with Msi afterburner make sure to click disable ulps. See if your gpu clock is fluctuating, you may need clockblocker

lol i did not think of that...but thats solid advise

Prime thanks for the heads up I will try that tomorrow.

Would it run the game at 4k though?

4k huh....that game actually sill might be possible. Either way follow the tips mentioned above i think you get CF working

Also, if you are getting framerates beyond 120, you will get tearing like no other. Every frame will be torn without a FRC or Vsync.

+1 to this as well. After making sure your drivers are up to date and testing with crossfire off; try turning on VSync as well as opening the console in game and typing "fps_max #" where # = the refresh rate of your monitor.

i shut off a card, then went through and lowered each setting, and nothing changed.

Thank you for finally doing the obvious.

Since it happens the same with one card as two, it's likely a Powernow bug. Try clockblocker as suggested earlier in this thread...or swap out your AMD card for Nvidia :D

that is not out of the question, when i get a new video card, i am gonna get a new motherboard and cpu to go along with it. for the limited amount of time i have to play games, it wouldn't make sense for me. i am off work this week and figured i'd give cs:go a whirl.

Then try Clockblocker. I don't know where it's hosted, but I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction.

i found it and installed it, no dice.

i lowered the resolution to 1920x1080 and it works better, framerate still pegged at 59-61 with v-sync on, but it doesn't run like complete shit, just looks like it :(

Sell those cards and but a single powerful card. I recommend Nvidia.

What good would that do me if it doesn't work right with a single card powerful enough to run the game as is? Thanks for the smart reply.

I recommend you take out both cards completely and try one at a time in different slots on your motherboard. If they both work fine solo in both slots then you know it's not a hardware problem.

If you notice no difference when using one card then I would remove the Crimson drivers and try the latest non crimson ones and see if that solves your problem.

Sorry, just a quick question before you try all that, do you have ULPS off?

My apologies, I read the thread again.

I am not sure there is any problem with your hardware. I missed the bit that said you were playing at 4K. 280x only has 3GB of memory. This will be problem at 4k. The most likely reason that it runs really bad is because you have vsync on and you are using all of the ram.

So try leaving the resolution at 4K but turn off all AA. Maybe turn off bloom and HDR and also turn down shadows and shader quality.

Yeah, you might be running into ram issues if the problem goes away at 1080p. Try other resolutions like 1440p just to be sure.

The 280x only has 3GB ram, and has ZERO frame buffer memory compression. I could see it running out of memory easily (but it's CS:GO, so it's still a stretch).

A 970 ( 3.5 GB plus aggressive frame buffer compression) or an R9 390 (8GB) would have no problems here.

at 19x10 you only use about 600mb of vram. i doubt you are running into vram issues, even a 4k. disable crossfire when you play csgo.

Realistically, in this application, would it be worth my while to put a video card into an x58 machine? I don't see huge gains in 980X to whatever in my usage scenarios. I just don't know what to do.

Well did you actually follow ANY of the suggestions mentioned in this thread? Like trying clockblocker? Disabling ulps? Try 16.1.1 driver? But of course a single more advanced card is always less trouble to use:D

actually yes i've tried all of them. if any of them fixed it, i would have said "hey awesome that worked, thank you", but it didn't. clockblocker did nothing.

a local gentleman wants to trade me a r9 fury that was unlocked to fury x for my 2 cards plus 200 cash, what do you think friends?

At worst, it's an unstable Fury X.

A) Check reviews to see if a single Fury will keep your FPS happy at 4K. My guess is that the answer is no, and you may need a second one. Do compare FPS with 2x 280Xs as well.
B) If you do end up pulling the trigger, I'd trade it for the value of a Fury, and not a Fury X. Maybe for 50-100$ cash instead of $200...

thats not a bad deal.....your cards are worth about 100 each..pluss 2 hundred comes to around 400 for the fury card.....you could do MUCH worse

Just a quick derail, but how are the OCs on Vanilla Fury cards? I know the Fury X is about at-limit, but are the vanilla fury cards able to stretch their legs a bit?

none of it really matters....they all push able to about the exact same performance....all with overclocking. nano is the slowest one and even it matches the fury x in many cases....i dam sure wouldn't sweat those details.....i sounds like your dealing with a local pc store....maybe they can demo it for you to make sure it works good

it's counter-strike...

You don't need to specify a max fps with vsync on, it by default will limit your fps to the monitors refresh rate. If you don't enable vsync, limiting your fps will not eliminate tearing by itself. You still need sync. Limiting fps is good if you're merely trying to reduce the power and heat consumption.

if you are serious about CSGO in a competitive aspect, you will want to ditch 4k, and get a 1080 24" 144hz LCD.

I would say you are dealing with input lag and tearing as to the issue you describe. If I play on our all in one Dell PC< there is so much input lag that if feels as if you are a half second behind, and rubber bandy if that makes sense.

guys i figured it out (and hopefully this helps someone in the future)

my guess is that the game is a little less demanding than the card would expect, so it treated it as 2D. It lowered the 2D graphics clock to 300 when playing the game (i charted it with ASUS GPU Tweak). I raised the 2D minimum clock speed to 794 mhz, raise the minimum fan speed to 42%, and every game runs perfect now.

That's good to know. Hopefully someone else is having the same issue and this same fix works for them. Always good to have verifiable and repeatable results.

thank you.

the new unreal was legit unplayable. kept going black all the freaking time, then i picked up on the graphics being shitty... then it clicked.
