To any of you CS players:

What kinna frame rates do you guys get on what kinna machine?

Im sitting here with a
P3|866
512|PC133
GFX5800
40gig 7200rpm

and im able to stay stable at 100fps untill I get into some action where it will drop as low as 60fps... thats a big jump. This is @ 640x480

What do I need to do to get the FPS to be more stable? I want them to be at least a constant 80, but im shooting for steady 100.

I know my machine is old but, can you think of any upgrades that would help me out?

Ok, first off why the hell are you playing any game at 640x480? Crank that bad boy up to 1024x768 with some AA and AF and just live with the 60FPS. 60FPS is a great FPS to be getting for any game, but I do rmember when CS 1.5 was out (before steam) and you could run all day at 1024x768 w/4x AA/AF and get 90 - 100FPS constant. CS really took a performance hit when 1.6 came out and they didn't even up the graphics much.

1.6 is a lot more processor dependent....and you have a p3 866....so....that's probably why....1.6 is a lot harder on a computer than any previous version has been....maybe time to upgrade for you ? :D

You're dealing with the noise of a GF FX 5800 for 640x480?!? Agreed with Jrmicon...

But if you really would like to eliminate the bottleneck, the CPU is it. I suggest getting a new CPU, mobo, and RAM. My recommendation would be an Athlon XP 2500+, DFI Infinity NFII Ultra or Abit NF7 with a stick of Buffalo PC3200 512Meg. Should run about $250.

You could also get away with picking up a Celeron based on the Tualatin core (FC-PGA2) but you'd probably need an adapter for one. You're in luck though :) ~~> For Socket boards & for Slot boards. What kind of mobo do you have? if it has decent overclocking features, you could go for a 1.0a or 1.1a Celeron and get an easy overclock to 133MHz FSB and this chip will be a good contender. Most importantly it would hold you over for AMD's Socket 939 which will be the platform to invest in IMO.

maybe you should stop playing counter strike because of all the cheaters and instead play battlefield 1942..

warsaw is just sad because he is horriable at CS.

So he thinks everyone hacks

Let's not do this again, children. If he feels like playing, let him play. There are those among us who believe that BF1942 sucks ass.

Your CPU is your bottleneck. At least get a 1ghz P3 in there, if possible; if not, try buying an Athlon mobo and a cheap Tbred B or someting.

Code:
//FPS Tweaker - teamzex.com
cl_weather "1"
fps_max "100"
developer "0"
r_dynamic "1"
r_novis "0"
r_traceglow "1"
r_wateralpha "1"
r_mirroralpha "0"
r_bmodelhighfrac "5.0"
r_lightmap "0"
gl_max_size "256"
precache "1"
mp_decals "20"
gl_affinemodels "0"
gl_alphamin "0.25"
gl_clear "0"
gl_dither "1"
gl_flipmatrix "0"
gl_flashblend "0"
gl_lightholes "0"

Add that to your userconfig.cfg and it'll be all good.
