CS & CS:S hitbox problems. Is it real?

I have a video of a Terrorist in CS:S that shows the wireframe hitbox and the box is definately not directly on the Terrorist when he moves. Is that video real? Is the lagging hitbox theory real? I've heard that the same deal was in 1.6 and it is still in Source? Tell me this isn't ture or it is fixed already, otherwise I wont bother with CS at all anymore. Thanks  :) :)

May be real. My strat is to keep moving in close combat, I rarely lose a 1v1 close combat battle, so maybe it is hitbox problems. Otherwise I just aim for the head when someone is moving, usually hit the head even when they are running (AK or M4). Records usually about 3:1, and if I'm below 2:1 I am sucking.

I had heard of this in 1.6 and all other HL multiplayer mods. If you are in the last slot on the server your hitbox is way off.

In one of the updates I've seen recently (last 6 months maybe?) it was claimed to be fixed.

Can you link to the video. I'd like to check it out.

I was under the impression that the hitbox lagged. Never noticed it in dm, only css though.

it's true. if your target is moving laterally (side to side) always shoot slightly behind them and you'll score more hits than if you were aiming square in the middle of their torso.

I would post the link but I dont remember where I got it from, If you want I could send it to you some how, it is only a 3sec video.

Someone please post when they do fix the problem :)

it's my understanding that it's a netcode thing and not a game thing. so it's possible that any game made with the source engine will have this problem.

DM does not have this problem. I only noticed it a few times in CS:S. and I play DM 10x more than I did CS.

Hamateer: WTF was that about?

The Thread: This is why I play DM more than CS:S, the hitbox lag annoys the hell out of me.

Isaacav2>> Yes I can guarantee and verify that it is 100% real - there is definitely a hitbox problem with CS:S. (I've seen the video - you can replicate it yourself but it is considered a 'cheat' - so you need your own server with cheats enabled, and enter the show hitbox command in the console or server).

This problem used to be in original CS - however it was fixed, unfortunately it has returned in CS:S, valve has promised a fix but it has not been released yet.

Its not a 'game' problem per se, its not a 'netcode' per se either - it is an movement estimation problem - the game predicts your future movement in between each time your pc sends your location for 'smoothing' of the game. So the game is not jerky, and everyone seems to run 'smoothly' on screen, even though the hitbox may not be where you see the person.

Its no secret that CS:S has this issue - there are quite a few players who have learned to 'shoot the invisible hitbox' instead of 'shooting the player' - crazy. I actually find myself subconsciously sometimes shooting thin air, instead of the player as I kind of 'guesstimate' where the hitbox actually is.

Now for the fixes - yes there are console command which you can enter which fix the problem, but please note the word "fix" is being used loosely - it works, and the hitboxes are on target, but, the game then becomes a jerk fest. As in jerky movements, which give it a 5 frames per second sort of feel - bleh.
These are the commands:
cl_interp 0
cl_interpolate 0

Now I do believe that valve will not just let such a massive issue slide - I honestly think that they are working on a fix atm. CS:S is enjoyable for me regardless, in time as things get fixed, and new maps are released etc it will only get better.

This may be a dumb question, but is the hitbox problem as big on a smaller LAN (10-20 people)?

I forgot where I got these shots from, but they display the issue.

are the hitboxes really that far off?

i know in 1.6 the hitboxes still lag. you can really tell when you use the awp and shoot people after they duck behind cover.

Can someone check the wireframes with bots? It feels right with bots, but theyre just too damned good. lol

What you are seeing is actually not really what you should be.

Go ahead and try to shoot those hitboxes there... I can bet your ass that it doesnt register damage, okay now hit the actual player model, oh look it does register.

There's something weird going for sure, but its hitbox lag the that is showing.

This is why I stopped playing CSS for the moment. The hitbox guessing game and the 50%+ headshot deaths pisses me off so much I refuse to play any more until they get it fixed. IMHO Valve has really let down the CS community that kept their name alive in the YEARS between game releases with a broken CSS. Thanks for nothing Valve. I hope STALKER is good as CSS is just not fun for me at all. Valve has not even offically hinted there is an issue yet, even though it is VERY well documented. This leads me to believe a fix is some time off, if it appears at all.

The images give a false sense of 'hitbox being in front the model always' - no the hitboxes move about in a manner depending on the players movement. 1/2 the time its actually in the correct place.

And yes the hitboxes are actually off - ask anyone who has played CS:S a lot, eventually you notice it. The hitboxes for players who are moving tend to stray.

I have many times killed people by shooting next to them sometimes on purpose, sometimes accidentally, and it very clearly was their hitbox taking the hit when their 'model' was nowhere close to the cursor.

It's at least partially a netcode issue.

Check out the forums at steampowered.com, some Tech Wiz over there spelled it all out.

and here I thought I just sucked :) But seriously, valve's quality in games has gone seriously down hill since their earlier iterations of half-life. I guess its back to "they hunger" for me.

to be quite honest, i think the only reason people are saying the hitboxes lag is because when you spec someone it shows them shooting laggy and not at the model. but when you are actually in game playing, they are fine.

in that second screenshot, why would only one models hitboxes be drawn? should all three be drawn?

I do play CS:S a lot. In fact I'm in two leagues for CS:S (TWL and CAL). If you want to think what those shots show are true then go ahead.

It existed in every HL-based game...

Just gets worse with every new update though.
