Thanks the folks at PC Gamer for this. Originally envisioned as Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age, another Left 4 Dead type of multiplayer game, Crytek Studios decided to keep the survival elements and put their own twist on things as well as changing the name.
As a duo, you and your partner will hunt down monsters in a spooky setting, but will have to also contend with four other teams of bounty hunters. Starting from the edge of each map teams roam about through dimly lit areas under the moonlight swamp. The game is "permadeath" of sorts, which means if you screw up, you lose your items, but you keep your unlocked traits in the characters "bloodline."
To me, it looks quite stunning. I predict I can put quite a few hours if everything pulls through. It's getting more difficult to have a consistent four on a team, having just another should be immensely easier. It is nice to hear from an old friend, especially after reports of financial issues last year. No release date nor specs have been released, we will update when these become available.

Checkout the pre-alpha game footage.
With more multiplayer survival games branching into horror territory, Hunt: Showdown could easily get lost in all the noise. I hope that doesn't happen because it feels like the one PvP survival horror game that could actually deliver.
