I've been having issues with my desktop PC's C:\ drive, so I picked up a "new to me" SSD that I was going to put an image of the C:\ drive on. But since this isnt a drive that I've used before I ran CrystalDisk on it to get some info.

Just wanted to post the results here to get some opinions. I'm new to CrystalDisk, but from what I'm seeing the numbers dont look too bad?? Also, would there be any additional things to know going from a HD to a SSD??? Thanks in advance for any input.

Your drive says it has 89% life left in it.

Other than that I have not seen much in SMART that helps. Considering that most reported SSDs failures (that I have seen) are not caused by the NAND wearing out but because of controller failure or firmware flaws there is not much failure prediction you can do using SMART for SSDs.
 
attribute 01 is pretty bad.... 6 out of 100...

but this doesn't mean the drive is bad, it could be that previous user was using the drive on "weird" sata controller and drive was having read/write errors.

ensure you have latest firmware.
 
Ok, I'll look into updating the firmware tonite. Looks like there is a slightly updated version out there.

Is there a different / better program that I could use to "test" the drive? I'd rather do some extra work now, before going thru the trouble of imaging this drive and setting it all up just to have it fail shortly after.
 
how come when I use CrystalDiskInfo on my WD Black mechanical drive it doesn't list the percentage?...it only says 'Good' under the Health Status
 
There is no wear level equivalent on HDDs - magnetical storage does not wear out the way flash does. It also does not mean that the drive is dead once it reaches 0%... it is just that the firmware reports that the pre-programmed program/erase cycle counter is depleted.

So I tried to update the firmware for this SSD. I downloaded an update tool from the OCZ website, but it doesnt detect the SSD?? I've been connecting the drive via USB with a powered SATA adapter and can see it in 'My Computer', but I get the below message after starting up the OCZ tool.

Any thoughts / suggestions???

Just hook it up as a secondary drive via SATA. Or you could try the PC Bootable option on the OCZ website.
 
I've found this guide but still havent had any luck. I tried it on my W7 laptop at home and then today on my XP machine here at work. Both times I get the "No Supported Drives Found" message.

I dont have a PC that I could internally connect it to. Wouldnt using the powered USB/SATA connection be the same thing??

Don't use the USB adapter. The drive will probably recognize just fine if you connect it directly to a sata port on the motherboard.

No, a USB adapter is not the same thing. The usb interface doesn't allow the drive to report its parameters and doesn't have full functionality of the sata interface. Their firmware updater isn't allowing you to update because you can't use the sata to usb adapter.
 
Ok, I didnt think there was a difference. I'll have to look around to find a PC with an open motherboard SATA slot. I will report back!!!

Yep, that was it. I was able to find a spare PC here at work, connect it to a motherboard SATA port and it showed up.

So I've got the updated firmware, gonna look to put an image of my desktop PC's C:\ drive on this and see how it goes. Here's the updated CrystalDisk info. Thanks again. :D
