I was given a crystal orb as a gift and i am wondering if this is worth trying. I have a 9800pro which i recently got and i want to see how far this badboy can go.

First of all, should i take the stock hs/hsf off and reapply with better thermal paste (cerimaque is all i have).

Secondly, should i put these BGA ramsinks i have on it? I would have to get some artic Alumina of course but even so, is it woth it...

Oh and, what prog is the one which is intergrated into the ati advanced settings? I had to reinstall windows a while ago and never got around to reinstalling my O/Cing program.

I know that the crystal orb was made for GF3 & 4's orig. I really do not know if it is meant for the radeons. But even new thermal paste/ceramique will help over the OEM stuff that's on it.

I don't think that anyone will be against you putting ramsinks on, especially if overclocking. So that one is a for sure.

Good luck! Let us know how far she goes.

corbs are actually really nice heatsinks for a vid card. much better than stock (at least on anything <=9700pro)

I was able to fit the Corb on a 9500PRO ... and I think the mounting holes are thae same on them high end radeons ...

I must have gotten the bad end of the deal but I tried a Crytal Orb on my BBA Radeon 9700 Pro, and saw very little diffrince in temps. Deffently not enough to make all the work I did to get the thing secured worth it. I currently run the Vantec ICEBerg4 and it's a noticeable diffrince. That and the crystal orb was quite loud. The vantec is not much diffrent on the sound levels but it cooled alot better. So my suggestion is.
If your just trying to keep your system more stable at stock speeds or just over the Crystal Orb will work fine. Just remeber to use some Artic Silver5.
But for some "lets see how far it will go" OCing use something a little nicer.

Thermaltake Crystal Orb is not bad and hell of nicer then the stock but not everything I found to hyped to be.

pretty good sink, definetly better than stock since its nickel-plated copper.

I wouldn't use it for a Radeon 9800 pro.

Use it for your chipset fan instead.
