Crysis....worth it?

Well, for a while now, I have been debating Crysis. Whether to...borrow or buy it. I have played the single player demo and found it interesting, however it didn't want to make me drive to the store and get it. I have a 3870 in my system (Check sig for specs), and I play at 1920x1200, and the demo is playable on all medium with only lag in big firefights.

Now I ask, if I buy the game, are there patches and stuff that will make it smoother for my system? I can't buy a 4870, and don't really plan to upgrade my 3870 until next year probably, so that isn't an option. Also, is it worth a buy or should I just borrow?

Thanks.

What exactly do you mean? ;)

I don't like to spend cash on games that really aren't worth it. If they are, I will, such as Mass Effect I picked up because it was so awesome.

i really enjoyed crysis, great game IMO. i think this answers your question though. if the gameplay in the demo didn't capture you then the full game probably won't either.

no, patches and driver updates provide minimal performance gain. there are tons of user-made configs that will increase performance some (usually at the cost of visual quality), but pretty much what you see with the demo is what you get.

Didn't they say they wouldn't be releasing another patch for Crysis a while back?

in my opinion the demo is as good as it gets, if the demo didn't wow you then the game won't. I honestly don't understand how it got all these high reviews and praise; maybe people see something in it I don't.

no patches will make it run better then it does - you need more hardware. some user made tweaks can make it run a little better.. but bottom line is short of a 4870X2, you wont see phenomenal increase in FPS.

don't get it crysis it was a epic pile of crap, it doesn't run well, game play is so repetitive and predictable you can play it with your eyes closed, yes it looked great if you set everything to max and just sat there looking at the screen but don't try and play it at those settings. plus they even said there is no more support for the game, and they are releasing warhead here soon which is the same game only running parallel to the original story, its not even different in anyway.

sorry but crysis was far cry with different characters. i really hope warhead fails in the most epic way so that maybe these dev's will learn that pretty looking game doesn't equal a A+ title. i say buy far cry for 10 bux if you haven't already and play that its a better game.

Nice troll.

Crysis' gameplay is a breath of fresh air compare to other extreme linear FPS's (ie. COD4).

Some might think be absolutely nuts, but I plan to wait a year or so until the graphics hardware catches up with the demands of the game. Right now even the most expensive setup can't sustain high framerates at ultra high details, and since I'm an eye candy junkie I want it all.

I tend to do this with a lot of games. A side benefit is they are usually half the price by the time that year elapses.

I enjoy the game right up until Space Mountain. Then, just like when you hit the mutants in Far Cry, I lose interest completely.

OP, I'm not sure why you need to ask the question.
Having played the demo, you get a good idea of the game, I think its fairly representative.
If you can borrow the game from someone, surely you can see what its like at later levels if need be.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I am going to play the demo again, and see what my final decision will be, as some of you seem to hate it haha. I will be picking up Warhead though, so I might just wait and get just that instead of both.

I bought Crysis when it came out, it was great. I hate alien portion of the game, but it was worth it to me. It ran a bit slow on high setting, so I did autodetect and it worked fine.

lol troll u funny

please tell me how crysis was a breath of fresh air? because you had a super suit?

COD4 may have been very linear but its story and how that story was told is what made that game, they should have spent more on the script and story for crysis then they did on the graphics.

Not different in any way, hm? Playing as Psycho isn't different?
playing as different character in the same story doesn't make it new. two characters with same goal the same island, the same enemy, is not new.

they could have put warhead in with crysis and had you jump from one character to another during the game ie COD4 instead of selling you a whole new game.

And to you Guitarrasdeamor if you pay for all the shipping i will give you my copy of crysis and you can decide for yourself.

wow that's a cool thing to do. hard for the OP to say no to that. props to you Mac[X-D].

I agree with Mac.

I enjoyed the story of CoD4 a lot more than I did Crysis. I actually preferred the story of FarCry over Crysis. It was the same old stuff except with better graphics. Crysis was fairly interesting until the whole alien mountain thing as others have stated. I really had no interest in playing it after that.

The game seemed to me to just be a marketing hype for new hardware and DX10. The sad thing is that most of the "NEW" graphical options in Crysis have been available in games past.
The biggest one being changing night to day. One of the best demos I played in some time was Typhoon Rising which changed the maps from night to day while you played and it supported a HUGE amount of players compared to what most games support now. I was disappointed with the full game though.

Back to Crysis... The developer did say that they are not supporting it anymore, which is ridiculous because I thought this is suppose to be a trilogy type game. I know for sure that I am not purchasing Warhead. It seems like a classic, "We have no story to tell so we will follow up with something similar so we can make some money" type of game.
I definitely think it did not live up to the hype it was suppose to be and would recommend you buy it used (or from Mac) if you want to play the full game. As also stated, no difference in gameplay or performance from the demo than the full game. The demo is actually the first part you play through.

Very nice of you Mac.

I actually disliked the game and set it aside after playing the first ~2 levels. Finally got back to it two weeks ago and beat it. Found the later Korean levels to be much better. The aliens weren't much fun though as once you begin to fight them it takes no strategy.

I really am amazed at the ferocity of some of the comments in this thread. Did Crysis come and knock your toast butter-side-down onto the floor or something?

Whilst Crysis does have a stock standard FPS storyline, the gameplay really is quite different from most other first person shooters. Granted I haven’t yet played Call Of Duty 4 so can't compare the two, but in all honesty I much preferred the gameplay in Crysis to that of the Half-Life 2 series.

In the review arena Crysis has received pretty much unanimously positive reviews, even the highly critical Zero Punctuation gave the game a recommendation. Ofcourse no game is perfect but Crysis does a lot of things right for the few it does wrong. And perhaps we should wait until warhead is released before we completely write it off?

So if you can't already tell I really liked Crysis, I found the gameplay to be refreshingly different from most other FPS on the market, and even on my mediocre system found the game incredibly atmospheric, especially in the last few levels of the game.

My advice would be to play the demo again or play a few more levels on a friend’s computer if possible, and see what you think. One mistake I think a few people make is to play Crysis like you would play a console FPS; without imagination and simply standing and holding down the fire button. This cuts you out from the significant amount of tactical depth that the game offers- make sure you actually use the suit powers, sneak around in the brush and lean around obstacles to get a view of your enemy without them seeing you.

I really don’t see how anyone can come anywhere near to calling this game an "epic pile of crap”

Just my thoughts.

Oh, and Crysis has the best one-liner, ever.

As a long time hold out I finally decided to get it, and I must say it improves on Farcry in every way. The aliens were more interesting than the trigens, the graphics of course were better, the ai was better, the gameplay was better(except in the alien ship, but other than that I loved it), the story was better, etc. I'm glad I picked it up.

Even on "medium" with my setup below I was pretty happy.

It always cracks me up when people say they are impressed with COD4's story, seriously? Its about as generic as it can get (not saying Crysis' is any better).

As far as gameplay goes, Crysis is superior to COD4, its not even close. COD4's single player is borderline terrible; its using the same damn formula since the first game, and that came out back in 2002. Infinite respawning enemies with brain dead AI, scripted sequences that gives you no control whatsoever. The campaign might be pretty cool the first time as an interactive movie, but it really has no replay value whatsoever.

Crysis on the other hand, at least gives you the freedom to do what you want in the game. It drops you in a big sandbox each level and lets you decide how you want to play the game. Combine that with the suit's powers, the possibilities are endless. Its always funny when people call Crysis' gameplay boring, well, that's because you're making it boring. While I do agree the game's quality drops after you leave the ice level, the first 2/3 of the game is great.

Graphics are awesome, gameplay is repetitive, and the story is no better than COD4. The AI in crysis is better than COD4 but it's nothing to get excited about because it still has some bugs. There are way more glitches in crysis too, not that I ever noticed any in COD4. Both games are good for at least 1 run through I think.

Other than the poor performance, incredibly stupid AI (Read: they walk into walls), limited objectives (countless jammers etc.), lack of future support via patches, and terrible alien enemies, the game isn't terrible. If you can get it used for $10 or so, it might be worth it.

I'm a multiplayer person, and from a multiplayer standpoint, Crysis is one of the best and most fun games I've ever played. I find that the "feel" of the game is simply perfect... everything from movement, jumping, picking up weapons, to shooting feels just right. There's no sluggishness or stiffness that many other games tend to have, and that means a lot to me. I like COD4 a lot, but I definitely enjoy Crysis more.

That's not to say the game isn't without flaws. There are still plenty of annoying bugs, just like any other title. A lot of people say its poorly coded, which is a load of crap considering how beautiful they made it on the proper settings. It is poorly optimized though, evidenced by the fact that you can put it on low/medium settings, have it look quite a bit worse in most areas than COD4, and still get much, much lower FPS.

That said, if you're a multiplayer person like me, I'd suggest waiting for Warhead, otherwise pick it up if you can get it cheap.

Well, my new setup runs everything at 1920X1200 everything maxed.

The only "problem" is I can only run 4X AA, 8AA gets choppy.

Of course it was expensive as hell, but to say today's hardware cant run it is a stretch.

OP, if you've played Far Cry, Crysis just feels like more of the same.

well since you dont even have a sig, what setup are you running that can play Crysis maxed out and 4x AA at 1920x1200? obviously nobody else seems to have such a system.

To the OP:

If you want to buy the game, buy it. If the demo ran fine for you then the retail game will run OK for you as well, maybe a bit choppy in certain areas.

I personally was disappointed by Crysis. So my hype and it was pretty linear, same tactic the whole game. Shoot somebody, cloak, wait, shoot, cloak, wait, etc. If you enjoy it though give it a shot.

I made a thread a few months back after I finally beat the game on my older Opteron 165 based rig basically stating why I didn't understand people bashed this game so badly. Personally, even at the somewhat choppy performance and reduced graphics detail I still had a blast on my old rig. The consensus from that thread was pretty much the same now: those who have the imagination to play in the sandbox will enjoy the game much more then those who don't appreciate that kind of thing.

I'm actually replaying it now, but this time on Delta mode using the most updated TripleC configuration files and the game looks and runs beautifully on my new system! I'm not the kind to play with an FPS counter so I have no clue what kind of framerates I'm getting - all I know is that I am enjoying this fresh new experience once again and it is oh-so much fun! :D The vistas are gorgeous and I'm not getting killed as often due to hiccups from my system. ;)

So basically if you can use your imagination to immerse yourself in the game, and you don't mind the occasional hiccup here and there in performance (or god forbid, compromise visual details for better performance) then Crysis is definitely worth it. And seeing as you're essentially getting it for next to nothing, OP, I think you're in for a good time for the full game. :D

Not crazy at all. I already have it and have played it through. But, I wish I had waited til I had a better vid card in my rig. Once I have a 280, 4870, or better in my system I will prolly replay the first half again. The alien parts in the last half were kinda meh.

but with crysis...its only linear and the same tactic if you make it that way....2 posts up from me nailed it...

thats the easiets way to get through the storyline no doubt... but have some fun. toss a grenade into the middle of camp to get everyones attention...jump onto of a building and light them up. then go prone and cloak to hide...wait until the surround the building....jump off the side punching someone on the way down with strength on and jump to the next building.

hell...set up traps with vehicles and shoot out the gas tanks. pick a fight with the boats...

its linear if yo want it to be, but its an absolute play world / sand box if you want it to be. its not like most games where its truly the same stuff over and over.

despite, to each their own!

for the cost of shipping though, you absolutely cant go wrong

Um, ok?

Yeah it runs pretty damn well if I say so myself. Only about 3 hours into the game and I hear the end is more intensive, so I may have to throttle down at some point.

For now though, it's buttery goodness.

If I show my E-peen off in my sig do you think I'd get some more E-respect?

/sigh

Doubt it, but at least you wouldn't have to list it at the end of each of your posts to avoid confusion. Nice rig, though.
