Crysis...is it THAT demanding?

So I'm playing Crysis with my brand new 4870x2 and there just seems to be parts of the game that bring my system to it's knees. Even if I lower the resolution down to 1680x1050, it still lags on certain parts. One part that I can't even pass cuz it lags so bad and then I die is the part where you defend the battle ship. My computer goes down to its knees. Any ideas? I'm using the custom Ultra High Config settings

Yah, it is widely regarded (at the highest resolutions with all the eye candy on) as the machine killer... or knee-capper as you've learned. There just ain't much out there that can play it full steam ahead at super high resolutions like 1920x1200 and even higher with what most hardcore folk consider "acceptable" performance - to me that would mean 60 fps, so it'll be a few years before we get there.

And of course, when we have machines that can play Crysis at 60 fps solid regardless of what's onscreen, they'll be producing games that make that machine get right back down on it's proverbial knees and... the cycle repeats. :)

if you set all your settings to high to look at the detail of hte insects on the tree or something, then there are lots of insects to render.

the game is very graphic orientated so there's a lot of graphics in that 15gig install, but gamewise, there's nothing there.

Even at 1680x1050, that particular part of the game (defending the battleships) just destroys my system. Completely destroy :(

and I know it was demanding but I just expected after all these driver updates/patches to make it run better and a brand new XFX 4870x2 I could at least finish the game :(

dont try to run the game in DX9 mode, DX9 got a really bad scale with Multi-GPU...

and do not use 64bit Crysis, its even worse...

overall, it should be pretty smooth.... not quite sure how you lag there...:S

Ah...I'm on Vista x64..that might be why :(

I really enjoy on 32 bit windows it crashing after a while because it hits the 2GB limit in DX10. Pure Quality Software!

I try it out every 3 months thinking "ok, it should run smooth enough to be enjoyable"

I uninstall it every time lol

I think I'll find it runs fast enough for me in 5 years then I'll be able to play the game.

Lol me too, and with the same hardware as before. :p

Why haven't the Crysis-fanboys bashed you haters yet? :p
Don't worry -- they'll be here. They'll tell us all we really need is a good config where we get Very High visuals with Low performance. Wait for it...

Oh dear lord, I guess you guys would rather still be stuck playing pac-man...

Im no fan boi but you haters are fucking retarded. A game developer tries to actually ADVANCE our gaming graphics and all you can do is whine about it when your shitty little PC wont handle it. stfu or buy a rig that will run it.

QFT

Inbefore someone with a 8800GT shows up and complains how its unoptimized and how he can max all the source engine games.

Yeah, that's how it is. Any time a game comes out that doesn't challenge our gaming PCs, it is instantly a crappy console port. And any time game comes out that does challenge us, it's an unoptimized POS. Amusingly, Valve games rarely challenge hardware and are also not widely panned by PC gamers...ye olde double standard at work.

This is why I gave up on being a game developer years ago. It is a no-win situation with PC gamers (unless you are Valve).

I think people are too attached and emotionally invested in their hardware these days. It used to be, if a game made your GPU or CPU grind, you bought a better one. Now, you defend your purchase to the flaming death. Hardware is nothing but a tool. Its purpose in life is to run software. If it can't run the software you want to run, get a better tool.

Disclaimer: I like Warhead and didn't care for the original Crysis (played it through once, haven't touched it since [H] stopped using it).

I played the entire game on max settings @ 1440x900 and averaged about 35 FPS. The only time I had to drop the settings was the end battle where I had to drop it to either medium or high (I can't remember). I think it has to do with the lighting/water since DX10 by nature at that time was more system intensive (not optimized enough). There were also 2 parts that the game just started to lag horribly and I had to reset the game to fix it. It was when the base gets turned to ice and when you enter the snow level.

Ok, so I just got this game from BB for $10 and never kept up on news for the game other than knowing it is a system killer. Now for the people talking about not working with x64, whats wrong with it? I was just getting ready to play it soon but have other games on the chopping block and also just picked up DiRT for $3.99, maybe skip crysis and play some DiRT until someone responds to the x64 part.

Crysis works perfectly fine with x64. I know the benchmark tool does not work with XP x64 but Vista it works fine.

Are you really so offended by opinions that differ from yours that you have to result to petty name-calling?

Weak.

Would like to tell me what my opinion exactly is?

Think again. I haven't taken any side to the matter, except calling fanboy's fanboy's and hater's hater's, which clearly puts me in neutral zone.

Bashing all equally.

Haha, a troll that assumes...

I don't really care for Crysis, I played and beat the game and was left saying "is that it"?. The game really seemed rushed and not very well written. In my opinion if you want a good Sci-Fi shooter, Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky reign supreme.

^^ I am not surprised.
Are you using the config that uses the higher textures, more detailed shadows and stuff to make the game prettier then the settings it was released with?
If you are then its no surprise that its gonna run bad.

Just run it on the normal high and NoAA.
There are a lot of config's you can try the will get you more performance while making it still look stunning.

Try Cuban Ultima Doom Arch Assassin Taowolf Sword's Custom Crysis Config [CCC] v2.21!

I use their config on Crysis and on Warhead. Its great.

^^ Click for Download page ^^

From my experience the Ultra High Configs aren't more demanding then Crysis Very High regular. These configs usually sacrifice mid-long distance image quality, draw quality etc for short distance image enhancements.

Far enough, my bad. I just tend to take a sour view of people who pre-emptively call others fanboys. That "term" is tossed around too much, and most frequently where it doesn't belong.

Haha, that is exactly how I feel.

I did not know that the 32-bit EXE was faster than the 64-bit. I should try that out next time.

I'm on an hd 4850 and it stutters all over the place, but then I expected that. Overclocking helps, but I figure I'd need a GTX 285 overclocked like hell with 4+ Ghz on a Core2 Quad or i7 in order to run 1680x1050 with full eye-candy. - And I expect there'd still be SOME stuttering.

Oh well... my 4850 runs every other game great.

Don't use AA, try using the Crysis Edge AA feature. Look for some of the customized config files out there.

Don't blame Crysis, blame the lack of advances in video card performance in the last couple of years (e.g. the GTX250).

Crysis 64bin got something wrong with it, the scaling for multi-GPU is completely broken under 64bit Crysis..

therefore just use the 32bit Crysis in 32bin folder should be fine and solve your problem..
