We were able to talk with Jack Mamais, Crysis’ Lead Designer, who wouldn’t confirm a release date but he said they are hoping to have it done by the first half of this year. He mentioned they are about to reach alpha development stage, meaning the one playable level they were showing was still non-optimized code. Running on a fast (single core) Intel CPU and a single Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX board, the game ran smooth for the most part on an impressive 2048x1536 resolution, with some choppiness noticed when things got really busy on the screen.

:) :) :)

That's mighty impressive. If they're not just blowing smoke up our asses then they've designed one of the best engines ever.

The 2048x1536 part is simply false. That fan-site picked TechSpot's bit about Crysis and made it as a big news post without any confirmation if it's true (so typical of them). The bit about "mostly 60fps" is also exaggeration (no wonder, since the source is The Inquirer).

I'm a huge Crytek and Crysis fan but I at least try to stay as true to things as possible.

Thats like Super HD. I think 4 8800GTXs will do the trick though.

Well that's disappointing :(.

I pray for a day when engines are not only gorgeous but don't require the latest $600 videocard to run at decent settings. I remember all this talk about Vista being an incredible gaming platform and that it was going to blow XP away. Something about it shutting everything down and dedicating everything it had to the game itself, running almost like a console. Is any of that still happening or was that more smoke and mirrors bullshit too?

Yeah, I agree. Doom 3 comes to mind as a great engine that scales well on older hardware while still offering impressive visuals.

Anyway, hopefully my 7900GT will be able to tide me over at 10x7 with full (DX9) details on until my next system build.

Didn't read the bit about 60+ fps, guess we'll have to wait for official benches and see what Crytek has to say about hardware and performance. Here's hoping for an April release and a game that wont put 8800GTX Sli to shame (and a demo beforehand)! Cheers!

IMO the farcry engine runs very well on most hardware you can throw it at, and I've seen it run on GMA 900 type video cards. I think they can certainly get similar results with crysis. Maybe not like farcry, but well enough so that such claims as we see here are possible.

yea, i was gonna say, 2048x1536 is a 4:3 ratio resolution for a fat-ass CRT, yet the pictures are of a 16:10 LCD.

Well, here is another site confirming it (Steve posted it in the main page):

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/45359

DX10 Crysis @ 2048x1536 in a 8800 card (probably GTX), with framerates fluctuating the 20-30 mark.
I'd call that impressive, considering that the devs say the game is in the alpha phase, at this point, meaning no optimizations.
That 8800 GTS 320 MB card is looking even more appealing to me :)

qft. if the 8800gts 320 can run crysis @ 1680x1050 with med-high settings with 60+ fps, i think my face will be permanently frozen in happiness.

I certainly wouldn't complain if this were the case, but I'm skeptical until I see official numbers. The farcry engine was (and still is) amazing for what it can do on older hardware so I think this could be possible, but that's just a ton of pixels to push; especially for a brand new engine which you usually can't max settings on for a year or so afterwards. Also, I'm curious what settings that alpha build has. If that's 2048x1600 with the lowest possible settings it's much less impressive and sort of defeats the purpose.

The article also said it was running on an unknown Core 2 Duo processor, and said NOTHING about what physics card was in the thing or the amount of RAM.

And I have a hard time believing that the game was running that smoothly with only one 8800GTX in it. I hope this is right though, because I just ordered a new rig from Newegg.com. I am getting only an 8800GTS though, but I am assuming that if the GTX can run it at that high of a resolution then the GTS can run it at only 1280*1024.

The only real reason I am upgrading though is for Command and Conquer 3, Supreme Commander, STALKER, and BioShock.

Crytek games look good yes, but I have yet to find them fun. ( I know others love them, guess I am just more of RTS & RPG type of guy )

The Inquirer is a load of absolute bull shit. This game does not perform as well as they think it does. The DEMO at ces was just a video.

Also, since when did Crysis need a PPU to play? There's no such thing as that. PPU's are just wasted chunks of PCB board.

what minimum size (inch) of LCD screen do you need for that resolution?

2048 1536 is a 4:3 aspect ratio which typically CRT's run not LCD (as they tend to be 5:4 or 16:10)

My 19" Iiyama CRT does 2048 1536 @ 75hz quite nicely.

I'm no fan of Far Cry really. I enjoyed the gameplay and the graphics, but the story and voice acting is just horrible.
What I've seen about Crysis, especially the video that explains its story, the nano-suit, etc, is quite appealing to me. Add that, to impressive graphics...I mean photo-realistic graphics and improved gameplay over what we had in Far Cry and I'm sold.

As I've compared in other threads, Unreal Engine 3 looks very good and I was impressed with its capabilities and the games that already use it. But then, Crysis, came along, and even in its alpha stage, it completely blows away UE3 and any other game that I've seen showcased, IMHO.

I hope to god this 20-30 fps quoted at that insane resolution is true; I didn't read the last few posts as there were too many numbers and colons for my brain to not thesplode with annoyance, but if it's true it sounds likely that as soon as I get Core 2 Duo'd I can run it happily at 1440x900 on a non-stupidly expensive graphics card. Fingers crossed, wha'.

Though, that said, the cynic in me says that this alpha level was most likely some wanky jungle path + scattered huts job, rather than a big ol' aircraft carrier with massive alien octopus freeze-ray tanks and dozens of AI cretins milling about. Just a hunch.

You do realize that Crysis is NOT Far Cry 2?!

Everything in Crysis is brand new - from what I heard in the interview from the makers of Crysis.

Yup, that's all I want. Actually, if I can crank 'em up to high, I'll settle for 40 or 50 fps as long as it's steady.

I'm kinda meh about the whole crysis thing, I din't like far cry much, all prettys, no game. We shall see.

i know its a bit off topic but can anyone shed some light on the subject ?

In name only. Were Ubisoft the ones publishing it, it would be Far Cry 2. It'd probably have some inconsequential tie-in to the entirely forgettable plot of the first game, and aside from that it'd be exactly the same. Besides, it sure looks from here like Crysis is little more than Far Cry in a prettier package. I'd say that calling Crysis the sequel to Far Cry is well and truly justified.

I'm almost positive that's bullshit. No doubt it shuts down the fancy UI, but aside from that, I'd bet it's more or less the same as XP. With some extra overhead, as is Microsoft's way with software revisions of any form.

Same here, I didn't like the weapons in farcry or the gameplay much, even on very easy the marines took a stupid amount of bullets to kill, I didn't find it hard as such just frustrating and unrealistic.

It shuts down the GUI (aero) when running fullscreen 3d applications, I'm fairly sure it shuts down 1-2 other things as well but not much. The GUI is a large part of the increase in the OS overehad compared to XP it can often be running at 80mb of RAM but that all completely unloads straight away.

Aero is actually very fast at starting/stopping which makes alt tabbing pretty smooth on a decent PC.

I am sorry, but what exactly in my post makes you believe I think Crysis is Far Cry 2 ?

The marines dropped like flies when you shot for their head. The only way they seemed to absorb a lot was when you aimed at their super thick body armor. Provided you were shooting at an enemy without body armor or aiming at their head where they weren't covered they died pretty realistically.

As for that Vista comment, I'm sure when I was reading about it 2 years ago it was talked up as being so much more efficient than XP and that the way it was shutting everything down was going to increase performance by like 30% or something on the same exact hardware. I'm willing to bet it was all bullshit but I was just wondering if it's any better than XP is.

Thank god Crysis isn't Far Cry 2. Far Cry was great fun until the mutants showed up and completely ruined the game.

Actually Far Cry 2 is in the works, Crysis is it's own beast.

Hmmm, not sure about that... if you look at the first pic in the OP, it shows media player displaying the shot. Now who's to say that the second picture isn't also media player but in full screen mode? :p

2 different systems, though.

In terms of the Vista info, supposedly it closes down Aero and "minimizes" system resources used when anything certified under "Games for Windows" is launched. I don't think it'll preform BETTER than XP, but more like CLOSER to XP. Otherwise, Vista has a TON of overhead running all the time. All of that security mumbo jumbo runs constantly and by default your startup registry is 7-8 entries long before installing anything. Hopefully this will allow gamers to keep their systems running normally without having to constantly tune things to ensure there aren't 10000 processes running all the time.
It wasn't noticeable in the betas, although the only game I had that seemed to be GFW certified was Neverwinter Nights 2. That and Nvidia's Vista drivers were alphas at the time.

Well spotted. It seems they've added a disclaimer saying that it's a screenshot from a video. Makes you wonder, if they do indeed have the game running in the second shot, why the fuck they didn't just take two photos...

Farcry 2 wont be made by crytek. The reason is because Ubisoft owns the farcry name. If Crytek makes the official farcry sequel it will use a different name.

Crysis is not a sequel to farcry as they have completely different stories.

hopefully this will also mean a GOOD story. the mutants were ok at first, but those giant 10-ft guys with rocket launchers sucked. they took entire shotty clips to kill, even on freakin EASY!!!!!!!!!!!.

I'd call that a bloody good hunch. Anyone expecting more is in for a huge reality check.

2048x1536...is that what I said? Get a load of this...

Not good

:( :( :(

And all those cool videos I've seen looked really good too...plenty of time to optimize til april...I hope. 1280x720 seemed most realistic to me...with at least some aa/af, yeesh.

Don't believe everything you see/read.
First of all, the source comes from some chinese website. Second, they say it's a 8800 GTX in SLI system, which is not possible, since there are no Vista drivers for the 8800 series, with SLI support yet.
Also, there are a few DX10 videos around and even though we don't know exactly what resolution was used, they were very smooth.
In the end, we're talking about a game that's not even out yet (not optimized), a new OS and new drivers for a whole new architecture. I'm sure that when its launched, Crysis will run very well, on a single 8800 GTX in DX10 mode, since it's the card being used during development.
